No Terps draft class has ever surpassed six players – until today.

Eight players were taken in the 2015 MLB First Year Player Draft, setting a new school record. The John Szefc regime has now produced 14 pro players in the last three years. The program has been responsible for 24 picks over that span, including eight recruits and a pair of two-time picks (Charlie White and Jake Stinnett).

“I think it shows that the plan we have in place is working, but without players who believe in our staff and the process, we wouldn’t be talking about this,” pitching coach Jim Belanger said.

Belanger plays a key part in Maryland’s recruiting efforts and produced four top-10 round pitchers in the last three years.

“All the credit goes to those players,” said Belanger. “A lot goes into it. I think the plan we have in place as far as throwing programs, throwing routines, weight lifting – all play major factors into development.  Ultimately though, it comes down to what guys do with it and we have some high character, hard working guys in our program who buy into what we are doing.”

Szefc, Belanger and their staff has put together back-to-back Regional Championship teams. Maryland has now experienced four consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 1975-78.
