With a runner on second and two outs, Brayden Martin tracked a pop fly in deep left field to secure the Terps’ first win of the season.
Maryland baseball (1-0) takes the season opener 5-4 over Georgia Southern (0-1) after a huge late-game rally. Down 4-1 entering the seventh, The Terps’ offense came alive.
With a chance to take its first lead of the game in the ninth, Orr delivered another clutch hit, this time a single through the left side. A sacrifice bunt put Orr in scoring position with one out and advanced again on a passed ball.
Kenny Lippman impressed early in the first. After walking a batter, the right-hander struck out the next two, generating swings and misses to end the Eagle’s hopes of jumping out to an early lead.
Maryland threatened in the second with two runners on with no outs after back-to-back singles from Alex Calarco and Eddie Hacopian but could not capitalize.
Lippman continued his dominance in the third. With a runner on third, Lippman delivered another splitter below the zone forcing a swinging strikeout to end the inning.
Georgia Southern broke up Lippman’s no-hitter in the fourth after a bunt to load the bases. Lippman almost worked his way out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam after forcing an infield flyout and a strikeout. However, the Eagles ultimately pushed in two runs, one on a walk and one on a passed ball. The Terps eventually got out of the inning with the score at 2-0.
Lippman was pulled in the fifth with a final line of four innings pitched with one hit, five strikeouts, and five walks.
Redshirt senior RHP Logan Berrier came in for Lippman. In his Maryland debut, Berrier put together a terrific outing. Berrier gave up five hits and two runs with six strikeouts. The run came in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly from JD Kaiser, pushing the lead to three.
The Maryland bats answered in the sixth, starting with a leadoff triple from Sam Hojnar that bounced off the bottom of the center field wall. Senior Kevin Keister drove in Hojnar with an infield hit to shortstop.
The Eagles quickly pushed the lead back to three in the bottom half of the inning. Josh Tate ripped a double down the left field line scoring Luke Odden from first. As Tate jogged his way into second base you could feel the momentum Maryland built slip away.
In the top of the seventh Jacob Orr delivered a huge two RBI homer to deep left field. Orr’s huge hit cut the lead to one entering the bottom of the seventh.
With two outs in the eighth, Hacopian hit a double to deep right-center field. Devin Russell quickly drove him in with a single through the left side, tying the game at four.
After the late-game heroics, Maryland starts its season 1-0. The Terps will be back in action Saturday afternoon looking to secure a series win.
