The Maryland Terrapins (5-1) used a huge second inning and strong bullpen Saturday to power a 10-4 win and hand the Pittsburgh Panthers (4-1) their first loss of 2024.
Pitt starter Ryan Reed came into the day with zero hits allowed in 2024. The Terps only needed two innings to ruin that stat.
After a 1-2-3 first inning, the Maryland offense exploded in the second. The Terps began the inning with an Alex Calarco strikeout but followed that up with four straight baserunners. The first run was brought home by Jacob Orr, who singled home Kevin Keister. Elijah Lambros extended the lead to 2-0 with his own RBI single, then Sam Hojnar cleared the bases with a double to make the score 5-0. Then for good measure, Chris Hacopian sent a ball out of the park to give the Terps a 7-0 advantage after two.
Reed would only get one more inning after that, where he escaped a one-out, bases-loaded opportunity after Hojnar grounded into a double play. Reed ended the day with seven earned runs on eight hits and three walks in just three innings of work.
The Panthers’ offense finally broke up Logan Koester’s shutout bid in the top of the fourth. Luke Cantwell led off the inning with a single, then a CJ Funk walk and Justin Fogel sacrifice sent Cantwell to third. Turner Grau brought him home with an RBI single, and Jake Kendro brought home another run to make it 7-2 before Koester forced a groundout to end the inning.
Pitt continued to chip away at Maryland’s seven-run cushion in the fifth. Dom Popa started the inning with a double, and a Keister error gave the Panthers runners on first and second with no outs. Cantwell returned to the plate and picked up an RBI single over the middle to cut the lead again. CJ Funk added another on a fielder’s choice, making the game 7-4.
That was the last inning of work for Logan Koester, who ended the afternoon with two strikeouts and three earned runs on six hits and two walks in five innings.
The Terps’ offense got back to work in the bottom of the fifth. Lambros and Jordan Crosland hit back-to-back singles off Ben Kovel to set up an RBI opportunity for Eddie Hacopian who hit a sacrifice fly to center to pad the Maryland lead.
Right-hander Joey McMannis was head coach Matt Swope’s first call to the bullpen. The freshman began his outing with a 1-2-3 sixth where he struck out two Panther hitters. McMannis finished off the game with three K’s and no runs in his two innings.
The bullpen was great overall. Logan Berrier inherited the bases loaded with nobody out and got a strikeout and a 1-2-3 double play to leave the inning unscathed. McMannis and Berrier combined for four scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
Maryland got some more insurance in the seventh. With two outs, Eddie Hacopian drew a walk off freshman Gavin Chillot. Hojnar followed with an RBI double, his eighth RBI of the Kleberg Bank College Classic. Chris Hacopian continued the attack with an RBI single to chase Chillot from the game and make the Terps’ lead 10-4.
The Terps will look for a perfect run in the Kleberg Bank College Classic when they play Washington tomorrow.
