Midweek Preview: Georgetown Hoyas

Maryland baseball (5-2) returns home for a Tuesday afternoon matchup with Georgetown.

The Terps come back to “The Bob” after a successful weekend at the Kleberg Bank College Classic. Maryland won its Friday and Saturday matchups against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi and Pitt before losing the weekend finale against Washington.

In the 6-5 loss to Washington, Maryland controlled the lead for most of the game after a three-run second inning. The Terps saw a two-run lead entering the eighth after junior Eddie Hacopian delivered a two-run, bases-loaded double. However, freshman Blake Wilson ripped a three-run homer to left field in the eighth, lifting the Huskies to a win.

Despite the bitter ending, the Terps should have some momentum with just two losses under their belt. The offense was hot all weekend, putting up 10 runs against Pitt and seven against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.

Senior Sam Hojnar was a major contributor to those wins and has impressed so far in his first season in a Maryland uniform. Hojnar has been an RBI machine, leading the team with 11. The Iowa transfer had four RBIs on both Friday and Saturday.

Now, the sights turn as the Terps look to rebound, starting with the Hoyas.

Georgetown Hoyas (3-4)

Last Season

In 2023, the Hoyas stayed just above .500, finishing with a 30-27 record and a 10-10 conference record. This secured Georgetown the fourth seed in the Big East baseball championship tournament. After dropping its first game to UConn, Georgetown stayed alive with a win over third-seeded Seton Hall. Facing UConn again the Hoyas fell 10-1, ending their season.

The Terps saw the 2023 Hoyas three times, winning two out of the three. In the two wins, Maryland’s offense dominated with a combined 26 runs. This includes a 16-3 win that saw seven Maryland home runs with two from Kevin Keister.

This Season

Georgetown kicked off its season in Arizona for the MLB Desert Invitational. The weekend was one to forget after the Hoyas lost all three games. Since then, they have bounced back, winning three of their last four, including a series win over Virginia Military Institute.

Hitters to Watch

Junior catcher Owen Carapellotti leads the Hoya’s offense coming off his second-team all-conference 2023 season. So far this season, Carapellotti is hitting .296 with a .923 OPS and two home runs, including one in Sunday’s win over Virginia Military Institute. Carapellotti usually bats clean-up but has alternated between the three, four, and five spots this season.

Also, watch for senior outfielder Jake Hyde who was batting lead-off last weekend. Hyde is batting .281 so far with two homers and a team-leading 10 RBIs. The senior hit over .320 in each of his last two seasons.

Pitchers to Watch

The Hoyas will be without last season’s ace Jake Bloss. Bloss was selected at the end of the third round in the 2023 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros. At Georgetown, Bloss put together a 2.58 ERA with 96 strikeouts over 76.2 innings.

This season, Georgetown has struggled to fill Bloss’ role and the staff has a combined 6.36 ERA. Maryland may face sophomore RHP Kai Leckszas who started last Wednesday’s win against Navy. Leckszas went three innings, allowing six hits and two runs with two strikeouts.
