Midweek Preview: Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers

Maryland baseball (12-4) continues its road trip against a familiar opponent in Mount St. Mary’s on Tuesday.

The Terps won two out of three last weekend in Charlotte with the two wins coming in Sunday’s doubleheader. Maryland’s pitching was key in the two wins as Logan Koester, Nate Haberthier, Joey McMannis, and Logan Berrier held the 49ers to four combined runs.

Offensively, Chris Hacopian went 5-for-8 with two home runs, a double, and four RBIs in the two games. Maryland hit five home runs (including Hacopian’s two) in the 13-2 game-one win.

Game two was much lower scoring for the Terps. Facing a 2-1 deficit, Maryland pushed two runs across in the sixth. Kevin Keister and Elijah Lambros each put together RBI hits on the way to a 3-2 win.

“That’s why you build a culture because these guys are used to winning,” coach Matt Swope said postgame, “The ‘Kevin Keister’s’ and ‘Lambros’s’ they’ve been in a lot of big games. I think they’re just used to winning and they came through right there.”

With the two wins, momentum continues to build as the sights turn to the Mountaineers.

Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers (1-10-1)

Last Season

In 2023, Mount St. Mary’s finished just below .500 at 25-27, missing the MAAC Championship tournament. After starting the season 5-0, the Mountaineers couldn’t get wins against conference opponents. Entering the last regular season series against Niagara, they stood above .500 until a series sweep ended their season.

This Season

The Mountaineers have struggled with their lone win coming in game two of the season against Norfolk State. This team struggles to close out games as four of their 10 losses have been by one run including two walk-offs.

The Terps took down the Mountaineers, winning 14-3 less than a month ago. Maryland scored six first-inning runs on three extra-base hits and kept rolling from there. Catcher Devin Russell’s three-run homer in the eighth put the finishing touches on a dominant win.

Hitters to Watch

Overall this offense lacks a consistent power bat. The Mountaineers have a combined eight home runs this year compared to Maryland’s 16. No Mountaineer batter has more than one home run this season.

Despite this, there’s still plenty of talent starting with sophomore JT Landwehr who leads the team in average (.324), OPS (1.011), and doubles (three). Leadoff hitter Tyler Long is hitting .308 with a .814 OPS and five RBIs. In last weekend’s doubleheader, Long hit a combined 5-for-10 with a two-run homer in game two.

Pitchers to Watch

The Mount’s starting pitching duo of Kyle Speas and Brendan Yagesh have had a great start to the season. Yagesh pitched on Friday against Norfolk State and they usually save Speas for weekend games.

Freshman Jakob Foster started against Maryland in the first matchup. However, Foster was quickly pulled after allowing five earned runs and only collecting one out. Mount St. Mary’s used eight pitchers over the weekend and it is unclear who gets the start against Maryland.
