The Maryland Terrapins (18-6) will take the beltway down to Capital One Park in Tysons, Virginia on Tuesday for a midweek battle with the Georgetown Hoyas (16-7).
The Terps come into the matchup fresh off their first Big Ten series of the season, a weekend clash with Michigan State. Maryland took two out of three from the Spartans at “The Bob” and has won five of their last six games.
The highlight of the series came in game three, where freshman Brayden Martin smacked a walk-off single off of Spartans’ reliever Harrison Cook, securing the series win for the Terps.
Here’s what to expect from Maryland’s Big East opponent.
Georgetown Hoyas (16-7)
Last Season
Georgetown went 30-27 in 2023 with a 10-10 record in the Big East. While the Hoyas claimed some impressive regular season wins of Connecticut and Seton Hall, their season stalled out in the Big East tournament where they lost twice to UConn.
Their big offensive leader in 2023 was first baseman Ubaldo Lopez, who has since left the Hoyas.
This Season
The Hoyas have had a strong start to the 2024 campaign. After they opened the year with a winless showing in the MLB Desert Invitational, Georgetown has gone 16-4. Most recently, the Hoyas swept a road series against Ohio State in Columbus.
However, one of Georgetown’s four losses in that span was to Maryland. The Hoyas came to College Park for a midweek matchup where the Terps, quite literally, walked to victory. Georgetown pitchers combined to surrender 10 walks and nine hits to the Terps in Maryland’s 14-5 rout.
Hitters to Watch
First baseman Christian Ficca has been an excellent replacement for the departed Lopez. Georgetown’s senior leads the team with a .402 average in 2024 to go along with his team-leading seven home runs and 37 RBIs.
Also keep an eye on infielder Josh Rolling. The graduate student has hit to the tune of a .325 average and leads the Hoyas with 22 walks.
Pitchers to Watch
Closer Nick Davis is the star of Georgetown’s pitching staff. The right-handed graduate student leads the Hoyas with a 0.91 WHIP and is second with his 2.51 ERA. In 14 and a third innings this season, Davis has five saves and 13 strikeouts.
The other half of Georgetown’s strong one-two bullpen punch is Andrew Citron. Mainly working as the Hoyas’ primary set-up man, Citron leads Georgetown with a 1.15 ERA and has 16 strikeouts over 15 and two-thirds innings.
