After another frustrating weekend that ended in a road series loss against South Florida, Maryland (10-10) returns to College Park on Tuesday for a matchup against Georgetown.
The Hoyas enter this midweek clash with similar motivation after getting swept by Monmouth this past weekend.
Tuesday represents the first of two meetings that Maryland and Georgetown have set for this season. The pair actually faced off in three separate midweeks last year, with the Terps winning the first two. But the final of those three matchups is best remembered.
In early April, Maryland and Georgetown squared off in Tysons, VA. That game saw the Hoyas pull off a wacky 13-12 win after scoring nine combined runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
A struggling Georgetown team also lost to Penn State last Wednesday, so with minimal momentum, it’s difficult to foresee a result that resembles last season’s final meeting. But, of course, anything can happen in midweek college baseball.
Georgetown Hoyas (7-13)
Last Season
The Hoyas went a respectable 36-21, winning the same number of home games as away (17). It was also the closest they’ve ever been to capturing a Big East conference championship and subsequent bid into the NCAA tournament.
Georgetown lost to St. John’s, 4-2, in the Big East tournament championship game — a heartbreaking defeat that saw the Hoyas lose a narrow lead in the late innings.
This Season
So far, Gerogetown has struggled to capture last season’s success to the tune of a 7-13 overall record. The Hoyas have also yet to play a conference matchup this season in the eight-team Big East.
Georgetown is coming off of a streak of nine home games, going 4-5 during that stretch. But, the Hoyas have been a measly 1-6 on the road so far this season, as location has seemingly been a significant factor in their play.
Hitters to Watch
After competing in all 20 games thus far, sophomore Ashtin Gilio leads Georgetown with a batting average of .370. He was also named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll on Monday due to his spectacular performance over Georgetown’s five games this past week. The outfielder slashed a ridiculous .500/.565/.900 during that stretch.
When it comes to home runs, Gilio’s three puts him in second place behind senior Owen Carapellotti — a senior who’s tallied four so far.
6-foot-4 outfielder Dylan Larkins has been Georgetown’s most impressive freshman bat this season. He’s hitting .317 with a .481 on-base percentage thanks to his Big East-leading 19 walks.
Pitchers to Watch
Left-handed pitcher Andrew Williams has gone 2-0 with his 2.95 ERA and 21 strikeouts, holding hitters to a .235 average as well. He has also been named Big East Pitcher of the Week twice this season. Thankfully for the Terps, Williams has exclusively featured in the weekend rotation and is unlikely to pitch on Tuesday.
Marshall Whitmer, another left-handed pitcher, narrowly trails Williams with 20 strikeouts. Sophomore Johan Franco, who appeared in just two games last season, flaunts a .162 opponent batting average — a team-leading mark by a considerable margin— out of the bullpen.
