Series Preview: Washington Huskies

The Dirty Terps are hitting the road to face Washington for the first time as conference opponents.

Maryland will play the Huskies at Husky Ballpark in Seattle on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The Terps enter the upcoming weekend 11-10 after a midweek victory against Georgetown pushed the squad over the .500 mark. Maryland looks to win its first conference series of the season after going 1-2 against UCLA in its first slate of Big Ten games earlier this month.

Here’s what to expect from Washington this weekend.

Washington Huskies (9-13, 2-1 Big Ten)

Last Season

The Huskies went 19-31-1 in 2024 with a 10-20 record in the Pac-12. Washington disappointed in the final Pac-12 tournament too, going two-and-out after losing to Cal and Arizona.

The Terps and Huskies faced each other as non-conference opponents in last season’s Kleberg Bank College Classic. The Huskies prevailed 6-5 in that Texas showdown thanks to a strong performance from starting pitcher Spencer Dessart. Luckily for the Terps, the 6-foot-2 right-hander is no longer with the Huskies as he’s since transferred to Cal.

This Season

The Huskies are off to a sluggish start in 2025.

Washington has already suffered two four-game losing streaks this season, including a series sweep against lowly in-state rival Gonzaga. The fourth game in that skid was a 3-1 loss against Pacific Lutheran — a Division III squad — this past Tuesday.

Nevertheless, the Huskies have performed respectably thus far against their conference foes.

Washington secured a pair of road victories over Nebraska two weeks ago to win its first Big Ten series. The Huskies also have a win over Big Ten rival Illinois, but it didn’t count toward conference standings since the matchup was scheduled when Washington was still in the Pac-12.

Hitters to Watch

Senior outfielder AJ Guerrero is on a tear for Washington in 2025. The four-year Husky has started 18 of 22 games this season and leads qualified hitters with a .311 average, .527 slugging, and 14 walks.

Catcher Colton Bower brings pop to the Huskies’ lineup. The redshirt sophomore leads Washington with four long balls in 2025. He also has sneaky speed for a catcher, swiping five bases on seven attempts this season.

Pitchers to Watch

Senior Jackson Thomas began the season in the bullpen for Washington but became the most productive Husky starter after being elevated into the Saturday slot. The right-hander has a 2-1 record with a 2.42 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 22.1 innings.

No other pitcher who’s started a game for the Huskies this season has an ERA south of 4.50.

Lefty Will Woodward also poses a unique threat out of the bullpen. The towering 6-foot-7 sophomore is yet to surrender a run in 2025. His WHIP is 0.67 with seven K’s through six innings of relief.

Probable Starters

Friday, March 21: Kyle McCoy vs. Reilly McAdams

Saturday, March 22: Logan Hastings vs. Jackson Thomas

Sunday, March 23: TBD vs. Tommy Brandenburg

Other Notable Points

Maryland is still trying to solidify its weekend rotation for the Big Ten slate. Kyle McCoy is the only starter who currently has a secure slot.

The Terps experimented last weekend against USF. Freshman Logan Hastings got the Saturday start — his third of the year — while Omar Melendez took the ball in the series finale against the Bulls. This also coincided with Joey McMannis’ use out of the bullpen.

Melendez is certainly still an option for the Sunday start, but there’s also a chance that midweek starter Jake Yeager gets bumped into that role after throwing just 49 pitches against Georgetown on Tuesday.
