Midweek Preview: George Mason Patriots

Maryland and George Mason have met 54 times since 1977, but recently, the matchup has been extremely tight.

The Terps have won 11 of the last 20 contests, and six of those victories have come at “The Bob.” So, as narrow as it may be, history suggests that Maryland has the upper hand in today’s home meeting.

The two teams last battled it out on June 4, 2023 — a sour memory for Terps fans.

George Mason prevailed 11-10 in walk-off fashion in a win-or-go-home matchup at the Winston-Salem Regional. While it was a frustrating defeat for the Terps, the win was a monumental one for a Patriots program that had been crowned Atlantic 10 champions just about a week prior.

With the Terps seeking some belated revenge, let’s take a look at what George Mason has to offer.

George Mason Patriots (16-8)

Last Season

In 2024, the Patriots weren’t as successful as they currently stand. They finished the season 21-32, winning the majority at home but only securing a measly three road victories.

They went the whole season without winning a weekend series on the road.

Second-year head coach Shawn Camp has made some pointed changes in an attempt to shift that narrative during the 2025 season.

This Season

The Patriots have 21 newcomers this year, 13 of them being freshmen. Just 16 members returned from the 2024 squad. They currently stand at 10-2 at home and 4-5 on the road.

George Mason faced a slow start to the season, falling to Eastern Carolina in the opening weekend series, and Georgetown in its first midweek. But the Patriots have been fairly successful since. They’ve won their four true weekend series and held a winning record in midweeks during the stretch.

The Patriots, like the Terps, are coming off of a Sunday loss though. They traveled to St. Bonaventure and won Friday and Saturday’s games, but suffered a 7-3 loss after the Bonnies posted a four-run seventh inning.

Hitters to Watch

Junior outfielder, James Quinn-Irons, impressively leads the offense with a .434 batting average, 43 hits, nine doubles, six homers, and 36 RBIs. His 35 runs scored also tie him with sophomore infielder Owen Hull for the team lead.

Hull follows closely behind Quinn-Irons in most categories, hitting .374, with 34 hits, and three homers.

The team imposingly leads the Atlantic 10 with 286 hits and 254 runs scored. Their team batting average of .334 is also the second-highest mark in the conference.

Pitchers to Watch

Right-handed pitcher Connor O’Hara has gone 3-1 so far. He also leads the pitching staff with seven starts, an ERA of 1.29, 35 IP, and 36 strikeouts. As of today, he has allowed five earned runs. The Terps will likely miss O’Hara, given his typical weekend starting duties.

Graduate student Sam Lavin is 3-0 with an ERA of 3.18. He also has 23 strikeouts and just ten runs allowed in six appearances.

Probable Starters

TBD vs. TBD

Jake Yeager has featured as Maryland’s midweek starter for virtually the entire season to this point, but the freshman got the ball in Sunday’s series finale against Washington. Thus, it’s unlikely to see that Yeager will feature this afternoon.

Other Notable Points

The Terps are currently 2-4 in their conference, but a win today could provide a significant morale boost on the eve of this weekend’s Big Ten matchup against Northwestern.
