The UMBC Golden Retrievers will make their way down to College Park on Tuesday afternoon to face off against the Maryland Terrapins (14-14).
The Terps look to carry Big Ten momentum into the midweek following a 22-11 run-rule win on Sunday to salvage the final game of this weekend’s series against Northwestern.
Maryland fell to the Golden Retrievers 4-2 in the second of the pair’s two matchups last season. It marked the Terps’ third loss to UMBC in their 25 matchups since 1999.
First pitch between the Golden Retrievers and Terps is set for 4:00 p.m. at “The Bob,” with Ben Strober and Jack Wynn on the call for MBN.
UMBC Golden Retrievers (8-13, 2-4 in America East)
Last Season:
In 2024, the Golden Retrievers finished over .500 for the first time since 2016 at 27-25 overall. They finished second in the America East Conference, losing the title to Bryant in the championship matchup.
The UMBC offense was powered by graduate student Justin Taylor and senior Anthony Swenda. The two veterans hit .319 with six home runs and 40 RBIs and .308 with eight home runs and 49 RBIs, respectively.
Their pitching staff was led by graduate student Sam Downs and senior Luke Johnson. Downs finished the year with a 2.83 ERA and 57 strikeouts. Johnson finished with a 4.82 ERA but led the team with 81 punchouts. The 6-foot-1 right-hander is currently under contract with the Washington Nationals, though he isn’t designated to a minor league organization at this time.
This season:
UMBC is 5-5 in its last 10 games this season, an improvement on the Golden Retrievers’ first 10 contests, which saw them play to a 2-8 record. They most recently took two of three games from Georgetown this past weekend.
The team is young, with 20 combined freshmen and sophomores on the roster, leaving room for future growth.
Hitters to watch:
Infielder Leewood Molessa is on a hot streak thus far this season. He leads UMBC in home runs (five), RBIs (18), and slugging percentage (.544) The redshirt sophomore from West Virginia is one of several young hitters whom the Golden Retrievers consistently rely on.
Fellow infielder Anthony Mascuilli is another offensive force to look out for. He leads the team with a .375 AVG and a .531 OPS. Mascuilli, a freshman from New Jersey, is another youthful contributor for the inexperienced Golden Retrievers.
Pitchers to watch:
Nick Remy, a right-handed senior from New Hampshire, leads the team in WHIP (0.78), strikeouts (16), and saves (two). He’s been the Golden Retrievers’ most effective option out of the bullpen. Look for Remy to be the go-to guy if a high-leverage situation presents itself on Tuesday.
Logano Wiley has been the best of the UMBC starters this season, sporting a 3.22 ERA in 22.1 innings pitched. The lefty sophomore from Delaware has been shut out of the win column thus far (0-1) but has been the steadiest of all Golden Retriever starters.
