Midweek Preview: Delaware Blue Hens

Maryland hits the road on Wednesday to face Delaware for the second time this season.

The Blue Hens were victorious in the Dirty Terps’ home opener back in February, beating Maryland 13-10 in Jake Yeager’s first career start.

The Terps enter this edition of the matchup ice cold, currently on their longest losing streak of the season. The slide reached five games following a home loss to Georgetown on Tuesday.

Here’s a little refresher on Wednesday’s host team.

Delaware Blue Hens (17-13, 5-4 CAA)

Last Season

The Blue Hens finished fourth in the Coastal Athletic Conference last season, going 31-26 overall with a 16-11 record in conference. That fourth-place finish earned Delaware a bid to the conference tournament, where it beat William & Mary twice before being ousted.

Maryland faced off with the Blue Hens twice as a non-conference opponent in 2024, beating Delaware both times.

This Season

The Blue Hens are on track to have a very similar record in 2025.

Despite a sluggish, 0-5 start to the 2025 campaign, Delaware found its footing and has strung together several good wins to earn a 17-13 record. The Blue Hens have had three winning streaks of three games or more in 2025.

Delaware spoiled Maryland’s home opener at “The Bob” on Feb, 25. The Blue Hens led 11-3 after six innings, but the Terps pieced together a late comeback. It ultimately fell short though, as the Terps lost 11-10.

Hitters to Watch

Senior outfielder Aaron Graeber runs the Delaware offense. The former Division III player has started all 30 of Delaware’s games in his second season as a Blue Hen, leading the team with a .348 average, nine home runs, and 31 RBI. He’s also a threat on the basepaths, going a perfect 9-for-9 on steal attempts this season.

Just behind him is fellow 30-game starter Aiden Stewart. The junior is slightly below Graeber’s marks on the three major categories but leads the team in OPS with an impressive 1.113 clip.

Pitchers to Watch

The Blue Hens have a pair of imposing lefties in the bullpen, the first of which is senior Carter Welch. The lefty has a 2.33 ERA over 10 relief appearances this season. He ranks third on the team with 23 strikeouts.

Jake Pollaro is Delaware’s other dominant reliever. The 6-foot-5 freshman has three saves in nine appearances in 2025, holding opposing batters to a .183 average in that span.

Maryland enters its second midweek matchup of the week searching for answers following its fifth consecutive loss. Any momentum would be welcome as Maryland needs some good vibes in its dugout ahead of this weekend’s series against No. 15 Oregon.
