Brayden Ryan, Elijah Lambros do heavy-lifting in midweek win over Delaware

Just after Liam Willson drove in Maryland’s first two runs of the game, Elijah Lambros stepped up to the plate with two outs and a runner on in the top of the fourth.

Lambros drilled a frozen rope to right, hitting a triple to score Willson from first. The flustered Blue Hens struggled with the relay, allowing Lambros to pick up a little league home run on an error and give the Dirty Terps a 4-1 lead.

Maryland (15-19, 3-9 Big Ten) snapped its five-game slide with a 10-2 win over Delaware (17-14, 5-4 CAA) on the road Wednesday.

The game began as a pitcher’s duel in Newark.

Both Maryland’s Brayden Ryan and Delaware’s Tim Hartman tossed scoreless first and second innings.

Hartman kept it up through the third, keeping Maryland off the scoreboard. Delaware’s starter struck out three Terps and only surrendered two hits to Chris Hacopian in his lone three innings of work.

The Blue Hens struck first in the bottom of the third.

With two outs and a runner on second, Ryan made his first true mistake on the mound for the day. He left a hanging pitch for Evan Bouldin, who doubled to the left-field wall and brought home the day’s first run, giving Delaware a 1-0 lead.

Maryland wasted no time for a response.

With Hartman out of the game, the Terps took full advantage of Ethan Shaub out of the Blue Hens’ bullpen. Willson kicked off Maryland’s four-run flurry in the fourth with a two-run single. The Terps added two more right after on Lambros’ little league home run.

The Blue Hens nearly responded in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with two outs. But Ryan hunkered down, drawing a clutch flyout from Jackson Tyer to keep Delaware off the scoreboard and force the Blue Hens to strand three runners.

It was the best appearance by far this season for Ryan. Maryland’s starter entered the day with an ERA north of 10 and five total strikeouts. Despite pitching himself into some jams, Ryan always dug himself out of them. The righty threw four innings of one-run ball with five K’s against the Blue Hens.

Maryland’s bullpen supported Ryan’s strong outing.

Andrew Koshy struck out five in two scoreless innings, including a clutch bottom of the sixth where he struck out Tyer when the Blue Hens had two on with two outs.

Matt Swope only needed two bullpen arms for this game. Koshy and Ryan van Buren combined to throw five innings of one-run baseball, a very positive sign from the Terps’ relievers.

The Maryland offense got back on the board to provide some insurance in the eighth.

Eddie Hacopian hit what looked like a routine grounder with two outs, but his unexpected hustle on the play threw off the Delaware defense, causing another run-scoring error. Chris Hacopian capitalized after his brother, driving in two more runs on a single to give the Terps a 7-1 lead late.

Willson picked up his third RBI of the day with a single in the ninth to bring home Alex Calarco, then Lambros added two more on a double as a last bit of insurance for Maryland.

With the losing streak over and the dugout vibes much higher, Daniel Stein and Oliver Schaack will be on the call for MBN on Friday when the Terps return to “The Bob” for a conference series with No. 15 Oregon. First pitch in the series opener is scheduled for 6 p.m.
