Series Preview: Nebraska Cornhuskers

Record-wise, Maryland (19-23, 5-13 Big Ten) and Nebraska are sitting at similar places right now, in what’s ultimately been a disappointing campaign so far for both teams.

A weekend series win will help boost Maryland’s confidence as it continues to push for a spot in the Big Ten tournament.

The Terps only have two midweeks and three weekend series left after this weekend’s three-game set against the Cornhuskers. It’s enough opportunities for Maryland to improve its record above .500 on the year, but the Terps will need to come away from this weekend with something positive.

With that being said, let’s take a look at Nebraska.

Nebraska Cornhuskers (19-22, 7-11 Big Ten)

Last Season

The Huskers ended the 2024 season successfully. Overall, they went 40-22 and 16-8 in conference play. They proved to be an adaptable team, winning a majority of both home and away matchups.

Nebraska also won last year’s Big Ten tournament against Penn State in a low-scoring (2-1) championship matchup. With that, the Huskers earned an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament, but their season ended in early June with a pair of losses to Florida in the Stillwater Regional.

This Season

Even though it finished last year on a relative high, Nebraska has regressed in 2025. The Cornhuskers sit at a .463 win rate and already hold 22 losses to their name, the same amount of defeats they ended last season with.

The Huskers are coming off a 4-0, midweek loss to Kansas, whom they previously beat this season.

Nebraska also holds a .389 win rate in the Big Ten, and comes into this road weekend series with a 7-12 record away from home.

Hitters to Watch

Junior Dylan Carey’s 39 hits are the second most of any Nebraska hitter, while his 31 RBIs are a team-leading mark. Starting every game this season, he has also displayed some power, to the tune of six home runs.

Speaking of homers, Nebraska is led in that department by sophomores Tyler Stone and Max Buettenback, who’ve each hit seven. Redshirt junior Cayden Brumbaugh has 48 hits to his name and 69 total bases, making him the team leader in both categories.

Pitchers to Watch

Left-handed pitcher Will Walsh has won four games this season, but is entering the weekend with a loss and no decision in his past two outings. He’s the only Nebraska pitcher to face over 200 batters so far this season, and he struck out 43. He holds a modest 4.72 ERA.

Right-handed starting pitcher Ty Horn has proven to be hit or miss this season. He has an overall ERA of 7.15, but leads the team this season in strikeouts with 46. Horn tends to get better the deeper he goes into a game.

Left-handed starter Jackson Brockett has a 4.06 ERA. He’s won one game but has three losses, while allowing 17 earned runs this season.
