Midweek Preview: Georgetown Hoyas

Maryland baseball is set to take on Georgetown in its home opener from “The Bob” on Tuesday. The midweek game comes on the heels of a season-opening series win against UNC-Wilmington.

The series was a big showing for the Terps’ pitching staff, which was the team’s biggest area of concern in the run up to the season.

Lance Williams struck out a career high six batters across five innings in his first start  for Maryland. In the Terps’ Saturday night contest, starter Jake Yeager only allowed one run in four innings while reliever Logan Hastings held the Seahawks to zero hits for the rest of the match.

Though Maryland has reason to be confident in this midweek matchup, they’ll be facing a familiar foe in the Hoyas. The Terps face off with Georgetown as a non-conference opponent every year and the Hoyas are on a two-game win streak in the all-time series. Here’s a look at the 2026 Georgetown squad, the first team hosted at “The Bob” this year.

Georgetown Hoyas (1-2)

Last Season

After coming within one win of securing an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament two years ago, the Hoyas cratered to a 16-40 record in 2025. Georgetown only managed three conference wins and missed out on the Big East tournament entirely.

Despite its disastrous campaign, one thing Georgetown could hang its hat on in 2025 was its two wins against Maryland. It was the first time the Hoyas beaten the Terps twice in a season in over two decades.

Powerful offensive performances dictated the outcomes of the three-game season series. A grand slam from infielder Jeremy Sheffield propelled Georgetown to its first win against the Terps, while he and two other Hoyas hit home runs to help win the rubber match.

In a similar manner, the Terps had three homers and six players with two or more runs scored in the two teams’ first encounters of 2025. Don’t be surprised if these two offenses set the pace again in Maryland’s home opener.

This Season

Georgetown started its 2026 campaign on the wrong foot, losing 13-2 against Winthrop University on Friday. The Hoyas’ defense unraveled midway through, with the Eagles scoring seven total runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

The two teams played a doubleheader the following day, where Winthrop won the first game 13-3. Georgetown took the second game after a stellar five innings from Spencer Seid, who struck out six while allowing no hits or earned runs.

Hitters to Watch

Georgetown retains the services of infielder Jeremy Sheffield, whose six hits are the most for any Hoya so far in 2026. He batted in four runs and stole two bases in the Georgetown’s first victory.

Connor Peek is another Georgetown slugger who’s off to a fast start. The senior went 4-for-6 with three runs scored, two runs batted in and a pair of doubles across the Hoyas’ Saturday doubleheader.

Pitchers To Watch

Georgetown’s pitching staff features perhaps their best ball player in senior righty JT Raab, who will likely make his first start of the year in College Park.

He achieved All-Big East First Team honors after posting a 3.63 ERA and 77 strikeouts in the 2025 season and has the potential to reach even bigger heights in this year’s campaign.

Kai Leckszas is dependable in the closer role for the Hoyas. He’s logged five saves in each of the last two years. He pitched the first three innings of Georgetown’s 2026 season.
