In their longest game since 1995, the Dirty Terps ultimately came up just short.
Tied 5-5 in the bottom of the 15th, freshman Blaze Rodriguez poked a single through Maryland’s defense with Steven Spalitta standing on second base. Spalitta motored home, walking off a crushing loss for the Terps that took over five hours to finish.
The loss means Maryland (3-4) got swept for the first time in 2026 after the 6-5 finish against Louisiana (5-2) on Sunday in Lafayette.
Despite the many scoreless innings late, the Dirty Terps’ offense wasted no time getting on the board, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a two-run blast from Ryan Costello. But that lead didn’t last long.
Following a scoreless bottom of the first and top of the second, the Ragin’ Cajuns’ offense exploded in the second inning.
Colt Brown led off with a double. Then Spalitta grounded out to advance Brown to third. Rodriguez singled right after, scoring Brown. After a productive out from Louisiana, Jordan Crosland dropped a ball to allow another run to score and tie the game.
The Ragin’ Cajuns’ offense wasn’t done for the half inning either.
Drew Markle singled, scoring Rigoberto Hernandez to give Louisiana a lead. Markle stole second base and Maddox Mandino doubled to let Markle score and extend the Ragin’ Cajuns’ advantage.
Both teams settled in on the pitching side for the middle innings.
The Terps and Ragin’ Cajuns combined for no runs, two hits and six strikeouts from innings three to five.
Then in the top of the sixth, Maryland’s offense clicked back into gear.
With two outs, Costello took advantage of a strong, steady wind to hammer his second home run of the afternoon and cut Louisiana’s lead in half. Mendez seized the same wind, making back-to-back home runs to tie the game 4-4 in the sixth.
The Ragin’ Cajuns immediately broke the tie in the bottom half of the inning.
Spalitta led off with a single, then moved to second on a groundout. Lee Amedee walked to keep the line moving, then Hernandez doubled to score Spalitta. Amedee gets to third. But the Terps contained the damage and got Amedee out at home to hold the score at one run.
Yet again, Maryland found a response to Louisiana.
Crosland began the top of the seventh with a walk and Maryland eventually loaded the bases for Brayden Martin. Martin delivered, hitting a sac fly to bring Crosland home and tie the game back up in Lafayette.
From there, the game turned into a marathon.
Mandino grounds out. Lewis flies out. Hebert flies out.
Both teams had stagnant offenses through the rest of regulation baseball. After another quiet inning in the 10th, Maryland appeared to finally make a rally in the top of the 11th.
Antonio Morales got on base after a hit by pitch, then stole second base to get a runner in scoring position for the Terps. Morales steals second. Jackson Sirois grounded out to send Morales to third. A Rylen Stockton walk put runners on the corners for Martin, but he grounded out to second and the game stayed tied 5-5 in the 11th.
Maryland threatened again in the 13th inning, loading the bases after a single and a pair of walks. But with one out, the Ragin’ Cajuns got Stockton to strike out and forced the inning into Martin’s hands again. He grounded out, stranding three runners and a prime scoring chance for the Terps.
Two innings later, Rodriguez hit his decisive single to win the game for Louisiana.
The Dirty Terps stay on the road for their midweek matchup, traveling to Newark for a game against the Delaware Blue Hens on Tuesday. Ryan Martin and Adam Lipman will be on the call for MBN here with first pitch at 4 p.m.
