Midweek Preview: Delaware Blue Hens

After getting swept at Louisiana this past weekend, the Terps now have a losing record for the first time in this young season. Maryland will look to get back to .500 as they welcome the Delaware Blue Hens on Tuesday for the first match of a four-game home stretch.

The Terrapins were originally scheduled to travel north to Newark, Del. for the first of their two games against the Blue Hens this season, but due to inclement weather the two sides have agreed to swap home dates. Maryland will now travel to Newark on March 3 for its second match against the Blue Hens.

The Terps’ weekend included two heartbreaking defeats including a blown three-run lead in the ninth on Friday and 15th inning walkoff for Louisiana to close out the series on Sunday.

Despite stellar performances from redshirt freshman Ryan Costello who hit two home runs on the day and sophomore right-handed pitcher Logan Hastings who pitched 7.2 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, an RBI single off the bat of freshman infielder Blaze Rodriguez ended the Terps’ weekend on a sour note. The four hour and 45 minute game marked the longest game for the Terrapins since 1995.

The Terps will try to put disappointment behind them when facing a familiar foe in Delaware who they lead 23-8 in the all-time series. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Tuesday from Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.

Delaware Blue Hens (1-6)

Last Season

The Blue Hens were able to finish their previous season just over .500 at 28-25, finishing seventh in the Coastal Athletic Association. Their 12-15 conference record was not good enough for them to qualify for the CAA tournament.

Delaware faced off against the Terps twice in 2025 going 1-1, winning the game in College Park and dropping the game in Newark.

Delaware beat Maryland 13-10 last February having seven different players record an RBI. Then-senior outfielder Aaron Graeber led the charge for the Blue Hens offense that day recording three RBIs on three hits which included two home runs. In addition to Graeber’s performance, outfielder Jackson Tyer recorded two RBIs on three hits and outfielder Andrew Amato hit a three-run homerun. Fortunately for the Terps, none of the three are still on the Blue Hen’s roster.

While the Blue Hens had a great day in the batter’s box, things didn’t go so well for them on the mound. Starting right-handed pitcher Ryan McLaughlin only went three innings in which he gave up three earned runs on five walks. Although Delaware entered the seventh with a comfortable eight-run lead, right-handed pitcher Tim Hartman kept things interesting after allowing seven runs in 1.2 innings pitched. The Terps will hope to continue their success against the two pitches if given the opportunity to face them on Tuesday.

This Season

Coming into the 2026 season, Delaware has switched over from the CAA to Conference USA.

Their inaugural C-USA season has certainly not gotten off to the start that the Blue Hens had hoped. In their two weekend series they have been swept by Elon and Mississippi State, which includes a 10-0 shutout loss to the Bulldogs on Saturday. Delaware’s only win on the season comes from a 6-4 midweek victory versus La Salle.

Nothing has really gone too well for the Blue Hens this year as they have been outscored 67-21 through seven games. They are currently hitting a team .193 batting average with a .549 OPS. From the mound, Delaware has a 2.20 WHIP with a 8.36 ERA while giving up double-digit runs in three games.

Hitters to Watch

Through its first seven games, Delaware has seen most of its offensive production come from the bat of senior infielder Evan Bouldin. The senior is currently posting a team-leading .385 batting average with team-leading 10 hits, four RBIs and a homer through seven starts. He is coming off a 3-for-5 performance with two stolen bases against Mississippi State on Sunday.

Along with Bouldin, junior utility man Vincent Davis is the only other player currently batting over .300 for the Blue Hens. Through his seven starts, Davis is batting .304 with seven hits, three RBIs and a home run. The junior has recorded a hit in each of his last two games.

Pitchers to Watch

Delaware’s bullpen has seen quality action out of multiple arms so far this season most notably, junior right-handed pitcher Jackson Hulcher. Through three appearances and six innings pitched so far, Hulcher has a 0.00 ERA, 10 strikeouts and a win. His best outing came in that win where he pitched three innings, striking out seven while allowing zero batters to reach base.

The Blue Hens have also seen two quality relief outings from freshman right-handed pitcher Chase Deibler to start the season. In his two appearances, Deibler has accumulated 3.2 innings of work with three strikeouts and only one hit allowed.
