Series Preview: Troy Trojans

The Terps enter the weekend riding high on a five-game win-streak, which is the longest under head coach Matt Swope’s tenure.

With a series sweep over Wagner and two midweek victories over Delaware, which featured two walk-offs, Maryland now sits four games over .500 at 8-4. The Dirty Terps’ bats have been hot over that stretch, scoring at least seven runs per game and recording a season-high 21 in Game 2 against Wagner

The Terps’ most recent win came in a 7-3 victory up I-95 as they took on Delaware. Ryan Costello continued his hot streak to begin his career at Maryland, going 2-for-2 with a solo home run, an RBI single and two walks. Brayden Ryan surrendered the three runs to Delaware on Wednesday, but five other Terps combined for eight innings of scoreless work.

The Terps will now travel down South for a weekend series against the Troy Trojans from Troy, Alabama. Maryland looks to extend its winning streak and improve from its last trip to the South, where it was swept by Louisiana.

Troy Trojans (5-7)

Last Season

In 2025, the Troy Trojans finished with a 39-21 overall record, going 18-12 in Sunbelt Conference play and finishing third in the standings.

Troy reached the semi-final round of the Sunbelt Championship tournament after wins over Texas State and Old Dominion. However, the Trojans’ run ended there after losing to the two-time defending Sunbelt champion Southern Miss.

After going down 2-1 in the first inning of its game against Southern Miss, the Trojans couldn’t capitalize on any scoring opportunities despite having their pitchers dominate. The game finished in a 2-1 defeat as the Trojans left 12 men on base, including six in scoring position.

This Season

Only three weeks into the season, Troy’s 2026 has been full of ups and downs. The Trojans have had lows as bad as two 12-run losses and highs as good as upsetting No. 8 Georgia. They most recently won on Sunday, defeating Rutgers 2-1, a familiar Big Ten opponent of the Terps.

Troy fell to Vanderbilt 4-1 in their latest outing. Senior left-handed pitcher Brock Tapper and junior right-handed pitcher Cooper Ellingworth began the game with a combined four scoreless innings. The Trojans would give up two runs in the sixth, followed by a run in each of the seventh and eighth to enter the ninth inning down four. The Trojans were able to score their lone run of the game, but nothing else in the ninth.

Hitters to Watch

Sophomore catcher Jimmy Janicki has had the hottest bat through his first 12 starts for the Trojans this season. Janicki currently has a team-leading .378 batting average, 17 hits, three home runs and 13 RBIs.

Senior infielder Aaron Piasecki, a transfer from Central Michigan, has also been a consistent part of Troy’s lineup. Piasecki leads the team with 10 walks, while also accumulating a .333 batting average, 14 hits, two home runs and eight RBIs.

Pitchers to Watch

Senior righty Tommy Egan has been satisfactory through his first three starts as the Trojans’ ace. The University of Illinois-Chicago transfer has pitched a 3.00 ERA with a team-leading 20 strikeouts and .173 opposing batting average over his 15 innings pitched. However, entering the weekend series against Maryland, he is coming off the worst start of his three outings. In Troy’s narrow 4-3 loss to Western Carolina last Friday, Egan gave up three earned runs on five hits over his five innings of work.

The Trojans have consistently gone to senior lefty Zach Crotchfelt for relief out of the bullpen. The Texas Tech transfer has a 3.09 ERA with 12 strikeouts and three walks over his 11.2 innings pitched on the season.
