Midweek Preview: Richmond Spiders

While Maryland was able to pick up its first ranked victory with a 6-4 over No. 12 USC on Saturday, it was unable to pull out the rubber match for its first Big Ten series win of the season.

In games one and two of the series, the Terps had to face two of the nation’s best starting pitchers. In both games, they hit against lefty Mason Edwards and righty Grant Govel better than any other team has this season. The Terps fell just short of a comeback in the series opener, losing 11-10 after being down 11-2 in the fourth inning. They took game two with three home runs from Ty Kaunas, Jackson Sirois and Brayden Martin. However, in the series finale, the Terps fell 14-4 in just eight innings for their fourth run-rule loss in their last seven games.

Maryland will look to get back in the win column in its second game against the Richmond Spiders this season.

The Terps were defeated by Richmond 7-5 two weeks ago at Pitt Field. Maryland took a two-run lead after a four-run sixth inning, but had no response after the Spiders scored four of their own in the bottom of the frame. Rylen Stockton and Ryan Costello both collected an RBI in the game, while Devin Russel hit a three-run home run.

The Terps will welcome the Spiders to College Park for their second meeting of the year on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.

Richmond Spiders (14-14)

Last Season

Despite going 33-19 overall in 2025, Richmond could not replicate similar success in conference play. The Spiders’ 14-16 conference record placed them tied for seventh in the Atlantic 10 standings. With only seven teams making the Atlantic 10 tournament, Richmond was beaten out by Dayton on tiebreakers, preventing the Spiders from making their conference tournament.

Richmond did dominate in nonconference play however, going 19-3 last year. Its most notable nonconference game was a 6-2 win over then-No. 23 ranked Virginia in Charlottesville.

This Season

Since their win over Maryland, which put them at 11-10, the Spiders have gone 3-4 and currently sit second to last in the Atlantic 10 conference with a 3-6 conference record. After their first midweek against Maryland, the Spiders traveled up to New York for a weekend series at Fordham. The Spiders lost the series after losing game one 8-4, winning game two 4-3 and dropping the rubber match 4-3. They then lost to Old Dominion in midweek before welcoming Rhode Island to Pitt Field this past weekend.

After big wins against Rhode Island in the first two games, winning 6-1 on Friday and 17-2 on Saturday, the Spiders couldn’t complete the sweep. Richmond narrowly lost in the series finale 2-1 after only being able to muster three hits. After Rhode Island struck first in the third, Richmond scored its lone run when Aidan O’Keefe homered in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at one. Junior righty Jackson Hincliffe surrendered the go-ahead run in the next inning, giving up an RBI double.

Hitters to Watch

The Spiders’ leading slugger this year has been graduate catcher Dylan Winebrenner, who has played in every one of the team’s games thus far. The Maryland native leads Richmond with a .330 batting average, 36 hits, 23 RBIs and eight home runs. In his previous game against the Terps two weeks ago, Winebrenner went 1-for-5 with a two-run double and two strikeouts.

Another consistent bat in Richmond’s lineup has been senior Michael Elko, who has also played in all 28 games for Richmond so far. Elko is currently batting .280 with 28 hits, 20 RBIs and three home runs while leading the team with 15 walks. Elko also went 1-for-5 against Maryland earlier this season with a two-run single and a strikeout.

Pitchers to Watch

Richmond’s bullpen includes two arms who have both pitched sub-2.5 ERAs over 10 or more innings.

The first is freshman left-hander Dom Ruggiero, who has a 1.69 ERA through 10.2 innings pitched. In his 10 appearances, he’s collected 13 strikeouts while limiting batters to a .184 batting average. Most recently on Sunday, Ruggiero pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing zero hits and getting two strikeouts.

The other is graduate right-handed pitcher Bijan Anvar. Anvar has a 2.03 ERA through 13.1 innings pitched with 14 strikeouts and a save. Anvar appeared in Richmond’s previous game against Maryland this season and went 0.2 innings, allowing no hits or walks with one strikeout.
