Maryland Losses Game 1 of Series Against Indiana 11-3

Maryland (15-19, 2-11 BIG), lost its fifth straight conference game, as the Dirty Terps lost against Indiana (14-19, 6-10 BIG) 11-3 on Friday in College Park.

The Dirty Terps had momentum after winning their last two games, but against the Hoosiers, they weren’t able to capitalize, and now lost their  sixth straight series opener.

Maryland has also not won an opening game against a conference opponent this season.

“That’s been the story of the team,” head coach Matt Swope said. “We’ve taken care of business and have done a pretty good job midweek, but we just haven’t been able to take that into the weekend.”

Indiana scored the first run of the game, when Hogan Denny hit a home run on the first pitch of the game to give the Hoosiers an early 1-0 lead.

The Hoosiers scored again in the second inning thanks to a Cal Gates RBI single to score Will Moore, and Indiana was up 2-0.

Rylen Stockton gave the Dirty Terps some momentum in the bottom of the second when he hit a home run to cut the Hoosiers lead down to a run.

Cole Decker hit a home run for the Hoosiers in the fourth inning, and Indiana was once again leading by two runs, with the score at 3-1.

Indiana made the game out of reach for the Dirty Terps, as the Hoosiers scored six runs in the sixth inning. Cooper Malamazian got the rally started for Indiana, when he homered to left field.

The Hoosiers scored again when Moore crossed home plate because of a wild pitch. Caleb Koskie then hit a three run homer to score himself, Denny and Decker, before Brayden Ricketts hit the third home run of the inning for Indiana. The Hoosiers were leading 9-1 by the end of the sixth

“That’s the most disappointing part of the game right there,” Swope said about the three home runs in the sixth. “I’ll live with the hits, but it’s tough to have three freebies in one inning.”

Maryland scored two runs in the seventh from a Paul Jones II homer and a Jordan Crosland RBI single, but it wasn’t enough to comeback.

Indiana regained an eight run lead in the ninth inning from T.J. Schuyler’s sacrifice bunt, and an RBI double from Jake Hanley, which determined the final score of 11-3.

The Dirty Terps will host the Hoosiers for Game 2 of the series on Saturday. Ryan Martin will be on the call for MBN, with first pitch at 2 p.m.
