Maryland (16-19, 3-11 BIG) didn’t hit its first home run of the game until Devin Russell homered to left center field to seal the win for the Dirty Terps in the bottom of the seventh, but eight doubles and 14 RBIs led Maryland to victory.
The Dirty Terps beat Indiana (14-20, 6-11 BIG), 14-4 in seven innings during Game 2 of the series in College Park.
Logan Hastings started on the mound for Maryland, and gave up three runs at the top of the first, when Cooper Malamazian hit a two-run RBI double, and Cole Decker hit another RBI double.
Hastings settled down after, and received run support from his teammates.
“Nobody ever likes giving up three in the first,” Hastings said. “I knew though that I felt good. I knew that they weren’t scoring enough, and they weren’t all over me. I knew I’d just go out there and keep chucking it later.”
The Dirty Terps got on the board in the first inning when Brayden Martin scored on a walk in RBI.
Maryland then went on to score five runs in the second inning. Jordan Crosland started off for Maryland and hit a two-run RBI double. Ty Kaunas and Martin hit RBI doubles also, with Nate Hawton-Henley hitting an RBI single afterward. The Dirty Terps were leading the Hoosiers 6-3 by the end of the second.
Indiana threatened Maryland in the fourth when Jake Hanley homered, cutting Maryland’s lead down to two runs, but the Dirty Terps silenced the Hoosiers, the rest of the game.
Rylen Stockton and David Mendez scored for Maryland in the fourth inning, giving the Dirty Terps a four run lead, in a game that was feeling out of reach for the Hoosiers.
The Dirty Terps had their second five run inning of the game in the sixth. Mendez scored again from a Devin Russell RBI double. Russell himself scored next off of a Brayden Martin groundout. Ty Kaunas hit another RBI, scoring Jordan Crosland and Colin Gibbs. Kaunas then scored off of a Paul Jones II double.
Maryland was leading 13-4 by the end of the sixth. Devin Russell’s walk off home run in the seventh, confirmed the win for Maryland, with a 14-4 score.
“It’s a nice teaching point for some guys,” head coach Matt Swope said on Maryland’s victory. “Yes he [Hastings] gave up three runs in the first inning, but the way you overcome that is by eliminating freebies. If you make them earn it in college baseball, then it’s not necessarily easy to hit.”
Maryland takes on Indiana for the series finale at noon in College Park. Daniel Stein will be on the call for MBN.
