Behind a five-run third inning and a strong start from freshman RHP Brian Shaffer, the Terps defeated the Appalachian State Mountaineers 8-2 in the final game of their three game set.
Shaffer pitched six innings, allowing four hits, two runs and striking out six en route to his first win of the season.
In the third inning, LaMonte Wade came through with a 2-RBI single with the bases loaded. Next, Nick Cieri plated two more with a 2-RBI single of his own. The Terps added three more runs in the 5th inning to pad their lead.
Relievers Zach Morris and Alex Robinson combined for three scoreless innings to keep the Mountaineers quiet.
Appalachian State’s only runs came from a two-run home run from Brandon Burris in the 6th inning.
With the win, the Terps improve their record to 7-2 on the season. Appalachian State falls to 4-5.
