Maryland drops Game 2 against Ohio State despite scoring 12 runs

Twelve runs were scored and nine different Terps got on base for Maryland in the second game of the series against Ohio State, but it wasn’t enough to lead the Dirty Terps to victory over the Buckeyes.

Ohio State (16-13, 6-5 B1G) ended up winning 14-12 against Maryland (13-17, 2-9 B1G) in Columbus on Saturday, with the Buckeyes reaching their sixth straight victory and the Dirty Terps losing nine out of their last 11 games, going back to March 17.

Maryland got on the board first as outfielder Jordan Crosland hit a solo home run in the top of the first to give the Dirty Terps an early 1-0 lead.

The lead didn’t last long, as Ohio State took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first, thanks to outfielder Alex Bemis’s home run and a sacrifice fly from right fielder Noah Furcht, scoring shortstop Henry Kaczmar.

Maryland tied the game in the top of the second when designated hitter Rylen Stockton scored on a sacrifice fly from infielder Jackson Sirois, with the score tied 2-2.

The Buckeyes weren’t satisfied with a tied ballgame.

Infielder CJ Reid hit a two-run homer, scoring himself and second baseman Lee Ellis in the bottom of the second, giving Ohio State a 4-2 lead. Ohio State added another run that same inning when Furcht hit an RBI double to score catcher Grant Mangrum, making it 5-2 in favor of the Buckeyes.

The Dirty Terps fought back in the top of the third inning, as they took a 6-5 lead thanks to first baseman Ryan Costello hitting a grand slam to score himself, Crosland, outfielder Brayden Martin and shortstop Ty Kaunas.

Maryland added two more runs to its lead in the third, with Sirois hitting a two-run homer leading him and Stockton home. The Dirty Terps were leading 8-5 by the middle of the third.

Ohio State was determined to keep scoring and ruin Maryland’s momentum. The Buckeyes started out strong in the bottom of the third when infielder Dane Harvey hit a home run, cutting the Dirty Terps lead to two. Mangrum then hit a two-run homer, scoring himself and Reid, to tie the game at 8-8.

Kaczmar hit the second two run homer in the bottom of the third, and the score was 10-8 in favor of the Buckeyes.

The Dirty Terps came crawling back in the sixth by having a four run inning. First came Kaunas’s two run homer, scoring himself and Crosland to tie the game 10-10. Then, Costello hit his second home run of the day to reclaim the lead. Finally, center fielder Nate Hawton-Henley tripled to score Sirois, and Maryland was up 12-10.

Maryland was not out of the woods though as Ellis hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to score himself and designated hitter Mason Eckelman, and the game was once again tied at 12-12.

Harvey’s two-run RBI single in the bottom of the seventh was enough to seal the Buckeyes victory, as Ohio State led 14-12 for the rest of the game.
