Devin Russell shines on his Senior Day, Terps take rubber match over Penn State 6-4

While the Terps entered Sunday’s rubber match with little to play for, vibes were high as Maryland baseball celebrated its seniors pregame for Senior Day.

One of those seniors happened to be redshirt junior catcher Devin Russell. The former Big Ten Champion, who has already had multiple clutch moments this season, came up clutch again in the season finale.

Tied at 4-4 entering the bottom of the sixth, Russell smashed a two-run home run to left to put the Terps ahead.

With reliever Lance Williams pitching three scoreless innings to end the game, the Terps (27-29, 9-21) finished their season with a conference series win thanks to a 6-4 win over the Nittany Lions (16-35, 9-21).

In his final start of the season, Logan Hastings got off to a troubled start. Just two pitches in, the sophomore gave up a solo home run to Jayden Davis to give Penn State a very early lead. Hastings then proceeded to give up a double and a walk before getting three straight outs to limit any further damage.

Maryland had no immediate response in the bottom of the frame but was able to tie it up in the second. After Bud Coombs was plunked and Paul Jones II singled, the Terps had runners on first and second. They both advanced on a Ty Kaunas groundout but it would be freshman Nate Hawton-Henley that cashed in Coombs from second.

Into the third, Hastings had runners on first and second with one out once again but gathered two swinging strikeouts to get out of the inning. After Game 2 starter Cristofer Cespedes racked up 12 strikeouts yesterday, Hastings had racked up five of his own through just three innings on Saturday.

In the bottom of the frame, it was Senior Day honoree Russell who gave the Terps their first lead of the game. Russell was able to pick up in his first at-bat right where he left off in his last at-bat in yesterday’s game, launching a solo home run to left-center field.

After Hastings recorded his second 1-2-3 frame to start the fourth inning, Jones II continued his flaming hot run at the plate. With Coombs on first, Jones II launched a no-doubt, 443 foot moonshot to right field to give the Terps a 4-1 lead. The homer marked the sophomore’s sixth in Maryland’s last five games and his 12th on the season.

The Nittany Lions chipped into their three-run deficit in the fifth after an RBI double drove in one, yet the strikeouts would continue for Hastings. The right-hander recorded all three outs of the inning via strikeouts. His nine through five innings would mark a new career high.

However, that wasn’t all the Nittany Lions had for Hastings. In the next inning, Spencer Barnett and Maddox McDonald went back-to-back with solo shots for Penn State’s second and third home runs of the day. Despite allowing the Nittany Lions to tie the game up at 4-4, Hastings stayed put on the mound and got his second straight three strikeout inning. For the second straight day, the Terps had a starting pitcher record a dozen strikeouts.

Hasting’s final line on the day was six innings pitched with 12 strikeouts, while allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks.

Russell continued to make sure his Senior Day would be one he would certainly remember. To a similar location of his first of the day, the redshirt junior smacked another home run to left-center field, this time however, he had Coombs on base. With his second home run and third RBI of the day, Russell had mulit-homer games in back-to-back days.

Entering the seventh with a 6-4 lead, head coach Matt Swope turned Williams out of the pen. In his righty’s first inning of work, he would only allow a walk.

Both teams were able to put runners in scoring position in the eighth but Penn State couldn’t make any ground up and Maryland couldn’t extend its lead.

After getting the first three outs of the season for the Terps, Williams had the chance to get the last three outs of the season.

He saved his best of his three innings on the day for last. The sophomore set down the Nittany Lions 1-2-3 to end the 2026 season with a conference series victory.

It was too little too late though, with the Terps already having been eliminated from postseason contention prior to entering this game. However, Maryland was able to send its seniors out on a positive note while the Terps eliminated top rival Penn State from Big Ten Tournament contention.
