Terps lose 5-2, drop series finale to Wolverines

After the Terrapins failed to score a run in the top of the first, stranding the bases loaded, southpaw Willie Rios toed the mound.

His struggles continued Sunday as the freshman failed to record an out in his fourth start of the season. The Wolverines started hot with back-to-back RBI singles from Jackson Glines and Carmen Benedetti. Then, with the bases loaded for Michigan, the Terps turned to the bullpen.

Sophomore Tayler Stiles came in and immediately gave up a bases-clearing double to Kyle Jusick. However, Jusick would be the last Wolverine to see second base.

Stiles buckled down and retired 16 straight to keep the Terps in the game. The lefty finished with seven scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and striking out two.

The Terps began to climb back in the third, drawing walk after walk from Wolverines starter Brett Adcock. Nick Cieri singled in Brandon Lowe, and Jose Cuas followed suit, knocking in Kevin Smith with a single of his own.

But, that’s as far as the Terps would get, as they were held scoreless for the rest of the game, much like the Wolverines.

With the win, Michigan takes the series and moves to 14-12, 2-4 in Big Ten play. The loss drops the No. 11 Terps to 18-7, 4-2 in conference play.

Next, the Terps will take on James Madison on Wednesday, April 1, at 4:00 p.m. in College Park, Maryland.
