Regional Preview: Wake Forest Demon Deacons

The Terps will face the first-seeded Wake Forest Demon Deacons, who dominated George Mason yesterday in a 12-0 rout. Maryland picked up a dominant win of their own in a 7-2 game against Northeastern, a team that gave them problems a month ago.

Maryland comes into this game riding a six-game win streak but will face their toughest opponent yet. The Demon Deacons have been stellar at home this season with a 29-3 record and the crowd for this one will be LOUD.

The 2022 season was a strong one for Wake Forest, finishing with a 41-19-1 record, earning them the second seed in the College Park Regional. Their season came to an end at the hands of the Terps in a 10-5 loss.

This Season

The Demon Deacons built off their successful 2022 season and have been dominant this year. Their 48-10 record is one of the best in college baseball. They have earned the No.1 spot on the D1baseball.com Top 25 and have sat at the top for the past month.

Hitters to Watch

Second baseman Justin Johnson headlined the Wake Forest offense in their game against Northeastern. Johnson went 2-4 and accounted for six of the team’s 12 RBIs.

Watch for junior Brock Willen who leads the team in home runs with 27 and combines that with a .351 batting average. Willen holds the Wake Forest single-season and career home run records.

Wake Forest also gets their power from First Team All ACC outfielder Nick Kurtz with a .371 batting average and 23 homers.

Pitchers to Watch

ACC Pitcher of the Year Rhett Lowder is most likely to get the start on Saturday. Lowder last pitched on May 25th where he only allowed three hits through seven innings. The right-hander has been lights out all year, posting a 1.69 ERA and a perfect 13-0 record.
