The Washington Huskies (2-3-1) defeated the Maryland Terrapins (5-2) Sunday, 6-5, in the first-ever matchup between the future Big Ten foes on the final day of the Kleberg Bank College Classic.
Washington’s win was led by a stellar outing from starter Spencer Dessart and a late go-ahead homer from freshman Blake Wilson.
The Huskies struck first. After Meade Johnson started the day with a strikeout of Cam Clayton, an AJ Guerrero walk and Jeter Ybarra double gave Washington runners on second and third. Aiva Arquette would drive in the run on a fielder’s choice to give the Huskies an early 1-0 lead.
Maryland responded right away. With one out in the top of the second, Kevin Keister walked and Jacob Orr doubled to put runners on second and third. Charlie Glennon extended the frame with a two-out walk to load the bases for Brayden Martin. The freshman delivered, clearing the bases with a double to left center to give the Terps the 3-1 advantage.
Aside from that rough second inning, Spencer Dessart had a near-perfect day on the mound for Washington. The Huskies’ starter had 1-2-3 innings in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth frames. In his six and two-thirds innings, Dessart surrendered just three hits and three walks to go along with his six K’s.
The Huskies reduced the Terps’ lead in the bottom of the fourth. Arquette continued to get the better of Johnson as the Washington second baseman hit a solo home run. The blast cut Maryland’s lead down to one.
That was Johnson’s last inning on the rubber. Maryland’s starter finished with two runs on three hits and five walks with three strikeouts.
Rutgers transfer Garrett French was first out of the Terps’ bullpen. He made a statement in his first inning as a Terp, striking out his first two batters. Arquette continued his excellent day with a double off of French, but he would escape the inning with a popout to third.
French did not have the same fate in the sixth. Designated hitter Michael Brown launched a ball over the right-field wall to tie the game. French settled back in to limit the damage for the inning, but things were looking up for Washington since the Terrapin bats had been silent.
Maryland finally chased Dessart from the game in the seventh after an infield single from Jacob Orr and a walk by Charlie Glennon gave the Terps two runners. The Huskies’ first reliever Max Fraser hit Brayden Martin to load the bases and was immediately pulled from the game. Their second choice, Isaac Yeager, came in to face Eddie Hacopian. Hacopian delivered, hitting a two-out single to drive in two runs to take back a 5-3 lead.
Reliever Evan Smith silenced the Huskies in the seventh inning, but could not do the same in the eighth. He started off the frame with a strikeout and a lineout, but then Smith walked back-to-back hitters to give Wilson an RBI opportunity. Wilson capitalized, smacking a ball over the left-field wall to give Washington a 6-5 lead heading into the ninth.
Gianluca Shinn got the save for the Huskies after the Terps collected a pair of hits to scare Washington in the ninth. Marylands comes back to “The Bob” on Tuesday where they look to rebound in a midweek matchup with Georgetown.
