Maryland pitching holds Charlotte to four combined runs in doubleheader win

Shutdown pitching and powerful batting helps Maryland baseball (12-4) to a Sunday doubleheader sweep against Charlotte (8-8) winning game one 13-2 and game two 3-2.

Logan Koester, Nate Haberthier, Joey McMannis and Logan Berrier held the 49ers to four combined runs and 13 hits.

Maryland took game one of the afternoon behind another stellar outing from Koester. The righty went six innings with five strikeouts, allowing just five hits and two runs. Koester has produced outings like this all season but this one could be the most important since it kept the bullpen rested for game two.

The Terps brought the power offensively to get Koester the win. Third baseman Chris Hacopian launched a solo home run to left field in the second to get an early lead and hit another in the ninth. The freshman hit three-for-four with a walk, two home runs, and four RBIs.

An Elijah Lambros two-run homer gave the Terps a commanding lead in the third. First baseman Eddie Hacopian hit a two-run blast of his own and Alex Calarco added another which put the finishing touches on a 13-2 win.

Outfielder Brayden Martin began the scoring in game two with an RBI single to right field.

Maryland’s pitching continued its dominant day in the second game. Freshman Joey McMannis got the start and allowed just one hit with two strikeouts in his first three innings.

Charlotte finally got to McMannis in the fourth starting with outfielder Carson Bayne reaching on an error by Eddie Hacopian. Brandon Stahlman brought him home on a single in the next at-bat. Another single that Hacopian had trouble fielding brought in another run, ending the day for McMannis.

Facing a 2-1 deficit, Maryland two some runs across in the sixth. Chris Hacopian continued his hot day with a lead-off double and Kevin Keister brought him home with a double to right. Lambros hit a sharp single to center that gave Maryland a 3-2 lead.

Relief pitcher Logan Berrier came in for McMannis and instantly terminated Charlotte’s momentum. The right-hander went four innings with four strikeouts, allowing just one hit. Berrier shut the door on the 49ers in the seventh and let out a loud yell, as Maryland secured the 3-2 win.

The two wins give the Terps a series win two games to one. Maryland continues its road trip with a Tuesday matchup against Mount St. Mary’s.
