Maryland baseball (13-4) steals a 6-4 win from Mount St. Mary’s (1-11-1) following Jordan Crosland and Brayden Martin’s late-inning heroics in Emmitsburg, MD on Tuesday.
With a 4-3 lead, the Mountaineers imploded in the ninth, walking Crosland and hitting Martin. Crosland scored the tying run on a wild pitch, putting Martin on third. Martin scored on a dropped ball by centerfielder Evan Smith.
Late-game struggles are normal for the Mount as five of their 11 losses have been by two runs or less including two walk-offs.
The Terps scored three unearned runs in the ninth after offense struggles all afternoon. For the first six innings, they had just three hits. Despite getting on base through walks (four) and hit by pitches (five), Maryland could not score. Six runners were left on base through the first four innings, three in scoring position.
Maryland finally pushed runs across in the seventh. Martin hit an RBI single up the middle to score Devin Russell. In the next at-bat, Crosland scored on an Eddie Hacopian groundout, tying the game at two.
Outfielders Crosland and Martin were the only Terps with multi-hit games. Crosland finished 2-for-3 while Martin hit 2-for-4 with an RBI as the leadoff hitter.
Mount St. Mary’s quickly squashed Maryland’s momentum. With the infield playing in, senior Shane Wockley hit a two-RBI single through the left side, taking a 4-2 lead entering the eighth.
The rally continued in the eighth when second baseman Sam Hojnar hit an RBI single to cut into the lead in the eighth. Kevin Keister added to the lead in the ninth with another RBI single, securing the Maryland win.
The first inning looked similar to the matchup a month ago as the Terps loaded the bases with just one out. Unlike last time, Maryland could not score after an infield groundout and a strikeout.
Instead, the Mountaineers scored first when first baseman Scott Seeker hit a solo home run to right field.
The home run was pitcher Ryan Van Buren’s only mistake. The right-hander went five innings with a strikeout, allowing four hits, one walk and one run.
From here, there was a pitcher’s duel. Outfielder Jordan Crosland got in scoring position after back-to-back Maryland two-out singles but was caught stealing third, ending the inning.
Later, Keister made an electric backhand grab and jump-throw to first base in the third inning. Maryland’s defense turned two double plays and did not commit an error on the afternoon.
Sophomore right-hander JB Manarchuck was one of four Mountaineers pitchers to shut down the Terps in the first six. Manarchuck allowed no hits with three strikeouts in two innings, all three strikeouts came in the sixth inning.
Mount St. Mary’s leadoff hitter Tyler Long launched the team’s second homer of the day in the sixth after Van Buren was taken out. This gave Long back-to-back games with a home run and became the first Mountaineer to hit multiple home runs in 2024.
Long’s offensive output was not enough as Maryland remains undefeated on Tuesday games in 2024. The Terps are on the road again this weekend against Portland (8-5).
