The Dirty Terps are hitting the road for a pair of in-state midweeks, traveling to UMBC on Tuesday and Navy on Wednesday.
Maryland struggled in its weekend series at Ohio State. Despite scoring eight runs in game one and 12 in game two, the Terps went 0-3 over the weekend in Columbus. Maryland ended the series with a shutout loss on Sunday.
The Terps, now on a three-game slide, look to build some confidence in this pair of midweek games before hosting Indiana for their next Big Ten series.
Here’s what to know about Maryland’s in-state rivals this weekend.
UMBC Retrievers (16-10, 5-1 America East)
Last Season
UMBC was less-than-stellar in 2025.
The Retrievers finished 18-28 with a record of 8-16 in conference play. UMBC held the regular season tiebreaker over UMass-Lowell, who also finished 8-16, to clinch the sixth and final slot in the America East tournament. The Retrievers fell to eventual tournament champion and NCAA tournament participant Binghampton in the first round, losing 14-8 in a high-scoring slug fest.
UMBC played the Terps in College Park last season. The Retrievers won 5-2 thanks to an eighth inning two-run blast from catcher Derek Paris. That game marked the first time since 2005 that UMBC won a game in College Park.
This Season
The Retrievers are at the top of America East so far in 2026.
UMBC started out 0-3 with a weekend sweep at the hands of Longwood, but rattled off three-straight wins after those losses to the Lancers. Entering this matchup, the Retrievers are in their best streak of the season, having won 11 of their past 13 games.
The lone common opponent the between Maryland and UMBC is Georgetown. The Terps dominated the Hoyas in their home opener back in February and the Retrievers did the same thing to Georgetown one week later. UMBC beat the Hoyas 12-7, the Retrievers’ first win of 2026.
Maryland is the only power conference school UMBC plays this season.
Hitters to Watch
Maryland fans will remember Paris from his late-game heroics to scorn the Terps last year. UMBC’s catcher, now in his senior season, leads qualified Retriever hitters with a .360 average. That said, he’s struggled with power this season. Paris only has seven extra-base hits in 2026 and zero home runs.
Fellow senior Ehi Okojie is UMBC’s primary power bat. He leads the team with seven long balls and is the only qualified hitter with an OPS above 1.000 this year. Okojie has started all 26 games for the Retrievers this season.
Pitchers to Watch
Sophomore Sergio Droz is arguably UMBC’s best bullpen arm. The right-hander is having an electric second season with the Retrievers, pitching to the tune of a 1.38 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 13 innings. Droz has only allowed two earned runs in 2026. The last one came all the way back on March 7 against Penn.
Aidan Boice took the last midweek start for the Retrievers and usually finds his way into the game for UMBC if he doesn’t start. The 6-foot-5 junior has a 5.50 ERA in 18 innings, but turned in one of his best outings last the season in his last appearance against George Washington. Boice started the Retrievers’ midweek and threw three innings of one-hit baseball. He surrendered an unearned run.
Navy Midshipmen (18-12, 5-7 Patriot League)
Last Season
Navy finished just above .500 in 2025, going 26-25 with a 14-11 record in the Patriot League.
The Midshipmen placed second in the regular season conference standings, winning the tiebreaker over rival Army thanks to their 4-1 record against the Black Knights. That luck didn’t continue in the Patriot League tournament as Army ousted Navy in the first round, winning a decisive game three in extra innings.
The only power conference school the Midshipmen played in 2025 was Virginia. The Cavaliers beat Navy 5-1 in Charlottesville last April.
This Season
The Midshipmen have won 18 of their first 30 games in 2026, but have struggled with stringing victories together. Navy’s longest win streak is four games, which it hit in early March against Dartmouth and Norfolk State.
The Midshipmen enter the game on a high, coming off a series win over Patriot League foe Lehigh. Navy scored 22 runs in three games against the Mountain Hawks.
Unlike UMBC, Maryland is not the only power conference school the Midshipmen face this year. Navy played a game against South Carolina in the “Salute the Troops Weekend” at the Gamecocks’ home field. South Carolina shutout the Midshipmen 8-0 in that late-Frebruary contest.
Hitters to Watch
Navy doesn’t have any qualified hitters batting .300 or better in 2026, but the closest is Victor Izquierdo. The senior from Illinois leads the Midshipmen with a .297 average and .905 OPS. His three home runs are tied for second on the team. Additionally, Izquierdo is a threat on the bases, leading Navy with 13 steals.
Tied for Izquierdo’s team-leading 23 RBIs is freshman infielder Tyler Cripe. He has 24 hits and 10 walks through 88 at-bats with the Midshipmen, including a 3-for-5, four-RBI effort in Navy’s second game against Army on March 28.
Pitchers to Watch
The primary midweek man for the Midshipmen is left-hander Ian Brown. Brown, who hasn’t pitched since March 24 due to Navy’s unorthodox schedule structure, has had an up-and-down 2026 season. His lackluster 6.00 ERA will turn some heads, but he does have 13 K’s in 12 innings of work. Brown’s best start came in his last game against St. Joseph’s where he threw four innings of one-run ball against the Hawks.
In the off-chance the Midshipmen decide to disrupt the normal weekend rotation since they face some stiff competition in the midweek, look out for front-line starter Brady Bendik. The 6-foot-4 righty 3-3 with a 1.78 ERA across eight starts this season. He leads Navy in innings with 50.2 and is second on the team with 62 strikeouts.
Probable Pitchers
Nic Morlang vs. Aidan Boice (UMBC)
Landon Edwards vs. Ian Brown (Navy)
Other Notable Points
This is Maryland’s first, and currently only, double midweek week in 2026.
The last time the Terps played two midweeks in the same week came last March. Maryland lost to No. 23 Virginia in Fredericksburg on Tuesday before beating Mount St. Mary’s the next day in College Park.
The last time the Terps went 2-for-2 in a double midweek week was April 2023. Maryland beat George Washington on the road Tuesday before another win at “The Bob” against James Madison on Wednesday.
As far as the individual teams go, the Terps have historically performed well against these foes. Since 1999, Maryland is 22-4 against UMBC, but is currently on a two-game losing streak to the Retrievers. Navy is a little bit more balanced, with Maryland leading the all-time series 35-30, but the Terps currently hold a 13-game win streak against the Midshipmen. This week marks the first time Maryland has visited the state capital since 2012, a game the Terps won 4-2.
