After being shutout in their most recent outing against Ohio State on Sunday, the Terps were able to get a shutout victory of their own.
Maryland’s best pitching performance of the year came from freshman Nic Morlang who had a 9.00 ERA coming into Tuesday’s game.
In only his fifth collegiate start, Morlang racked up three K’s while only allowing two walks, five hits, and no runs over six innings pitched.
Even with Morlang’s stellar start, the freshman received plenty of run support as the Terps (14-18, 2-10) defeated the UMBC Retrievers (16-11, 5-1) 11-0 in just seven innings.
After both teams went scoreless in the first, Maryland wasn’t going to wait any longer to have its offense break out.
Sophomore infielder Jackson Sirois wasted no time extending his five-game hitting streak, hitting a double on the first pitch of the second inning. With Sirois reaching third on a groundout, junior David Mendez got the Terps on the board first with an RBI single.
That wasn’t all the Terps had in them for the inning though.
Redshirt sophomore Jordan Crosland capped off the second with a three-run blast that easily cleared the left-field fence. The Terps four-run inning gave freshman starting pitcher Morlang some much-appreciated run support early.
For the first time in his young career, Morlang was able to get through the first two innings of a start scoreless. After only walking one in the first, he followed up in the second with a 1-2-3 inning.
In the third, the Terps weren’t done with the longball just yet. With freshman shortstop Ty Kaunas on first, sophomore catcher Rylen Stockton hit his sixth home run of the season on a ball that just barely carried over the fence.
Before the inning was over, a free pass to junior Brayden Martin with bases loaded allowed sophomore Paul Jones II to score the Terps seventh run of the day.
UMBC’s bats continued to go quiet.
The two teams went scoreless again in the fourth after Colin Gibbs grounded into a double play and Morlang set the Retrievers down in order once again.
Morlang found himself in his first jam of the day in the fifth inning.
After a Derek Paris single and Jesiah Carpenter put two in scoring position for UMBC, Morlang escaped the inning with a swinging strikeout and groundout. His fifth scoreless inning marked a new career high in innings pitched in a game.
Maryland got back on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth.
Sophomore infielder Colin Gibbs plated another run for the Terps after UMBC right-handed reliever Cole Koonce walked the bases loaded. The RBI single marked Gibbs second hit and fourth RBI of the season.
Morlang continued to shut down the Retrievers in his best career start. Once again, the freshman would strand a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth.
The Dirty Terps took a double-digit lead in the seventh to set up a mercy rule victory..
After Aden Hill walked to leadoff the inning, three deep hits followed. Crosland singled off the outfield wall while Ryan Costello and Kaunas both recorded RBIs with doubles off the wall. Gibbs also followed, recording his second RBI of the day on a fielder’s choice to push the Terps’ lead to 11-0.
Head coach Matt Swope made his first call to the bullpen after Morlang surrendered a walk and single to begin the inning.
Sophomore right-hander Ryan Bailey entered to get the final three outs with runners on first and second.
Bailey took care of business to secure the 11-0 shutout victory in mercy rule fashion. He sat down all three of his batters faced while punching out two via swinging strikeouts.
The Terps are back on the road Wednesday for their second midweek matchup of the week. Tune into MBN’s live broadcast from Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium with Daniel Stein on the call. Maryland will take on the Navy Midshipmen with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
