Brandon Lowe continued his hot hitting as No. 14 Maryland defeated Minnesota 8-3 Sunday at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium in College Park, Maryland.
Lowe had three of Maryland’s eight hits, including a solo home run to center in the sixth, which extended Maryland’s lead to 7-3. He also singled to drive in the first Terrapin run in the third. The redshirt sophomore is now hitting .407 with 13 extra base hits through the team’s first 21 games.
Sunday marked Maryland’s tenth straight win, as the Terps swept the Golden Gophers in what was their first Big Ten series in school history.
With the Terrapins trailing 3-1 in the fourth, right fielder Anthony Papio came through with an RBI single to right, which was followed up by a Kevin Biondic RBI groundout that tied the game.
In the fifth, Maryland pounded out four straight hits to score three and double up Minnesota, 6-3. Kevin Smith and Kevin Martir began the inning with doubles, before Jose Cuas and Nick Cieri singled. Tim Lewis drove in the final run of the frame with a sacrifice fly to center.
Tayler Stiles ptiched three innings of scoreless relief for Maryland, allowing only one baserunner while striking out four. Rob Galligan and Brian Shaffer added scoreless innings of relief to close out the sweep.
Maryland (17-4) will be back in action Tuesday when they take on James Madison (9-10) at 6:15pm right here on the Maryland Baseball Network.
