Terps Drop Second Game of Weekend, Fall 13-2 to Indiana

By Jimmy Perrino

The Indiana Hoosiers (25-19) defeated the Maryland Terrapins (32-15) by a score of 13-2 at Shipley Field on Saturday. Kyle Hart (2-0) got the better of Rob Galligan (2-3) in the matchup of big, soft-throwing southpaws.

The 6’4” Galligian ran into trouble early, giving up a pair of runs in both the first and second innings. Coupled with Umpire Jeff Doy’s small strike zone, Galligan was uncharacteristically wild. After walking the leadoff batter Casey Rodrigue, a wild pitch followed by a Nick Ramos double brought him home. After another wild pitch, Scott Donley rolled over to the right side to bring Ramos home as well. Neither of the runs Galligan allowed in the second inning was earned. Anthony Papio dropped a fly ball, which set up Rodrigue to drive in Will Nolden. Rodrigue was involved in the fourth run scoring as well. After getting picked off first, the subsequent rundown allowed Isaiah Pasteur to sneak home, giving Indiana a 4-0 lead.

The middle innings were slightly kinder to the Terps, but not by much. The only run the 6’5” Hart allowed came in the fourth inning when Kevin Martir doubled in Brandon Lowe, who had singled the at-bat beforehand. However, Indiana extended the lead in the to of the fifth. Pasteur led off the frame with a long ball and the Hoosiers push one more across on a Brad Hartong single.

The 6-1 score line held until the bottom of the seventh inning. Jamal Wade entered the game as a pinch hitter and immediately homered to the power alley in left. However, that is a close as Maryland would get.

Bobby Ruse was strong in relief for Maryland. He only allowed three hits in three innings of relief, although he allowed three earned runs after leaving runners on before exiting the game in the eighth inning. Ruse, Jack Piekos and Brian Shaffer allowed seven in that inning, pushing the score to 13-2, essentially eliminating all hope of a comeback.

The series will conclude Sunday at 11:00am. Junior Jake Drossner will take the hill for the Terrapins and try to pull a win out of the weekend in the teams penultimate home game of the season. As always you can listen to that game here.
