The Maryland Terrapins are coming off a .500 California road trip over spring break. The Terps lost a mid-week matchup last week with UC Irvine, but responded with a series win at the #23 ranked Cal State Fullerton Titans. The Terps were walked off in extra innings by the Titans last Friday, but followed up with a complete game win by RHP Taylor Bloom on Saturday and a complete game shutout by Brian Schaffer on Sunday. Schaffer was named Big Ten Co-Pitcher of the Week.
Terps second baseman Nick Dunn has been hot all season and outfielder Marty Costes stepped up for the Terps over the weekend. Dunn continues to lead the team in hitting with 27 hits, a .370 batting average, and a .466 on-base percentage. Costes drove in a run and scored the game-tying run in the eighth inning of Friday’s 3-2 loss, hit two home runs in Saturday’s 8-4 win, and recorded one of Maryland’s four hits in Sunday’s 1-0 win.
Despite recent brilliant pitching performances and boasting three starting pitching with sub-three ERAs (Mike Shawaryn, Bloom, Schaffer), the Terps bullpen continues to struggle. Only two of 10 re
lievers sport an ERA below 5.00.
The Terps come home to face the Liberty Flames for a mid-week matchup at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium in College Park, Maryland 6 p.m Tuesday. The two teams played each other twice last season, with each club winning one game.
The Flames, who made the NCAA tournament in 2013 and 2014, sit at 13-9 on the season. The Flames dropped three of four games at home in Lynchburg, Virginia to Kent State this past weekend. The Flames are 2-4 on the road this year.
The Flames are led on offense by left fielder and first baseman Andrew Yacyk. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound junior is batting .278 and leads the team in home runs (5) and RBIs (21). Also contributing on the offensive end is outfielder D.J. Artis. The freshman leads the team in hitting with 33 hits and a .407 batting average. He also leads the team in steals with seven.
RHP Shane Quarterley is the pride of the Flames’ bullpen. The junior is 3-0 with a 1.47 ERA and three saves in 10 appearances and 18.2 innings pitched out of the ‘pen. He has allowed nine walks, has struck out 13 batters, and opposing batters are hitting .261 against him. He pitched five innings of one-hit ball in relief in last Tuesday’s 22-7 win over Virginia Tech. However, the rest of the Flames’ bullpen has trouble keeping runs off the board.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP
TUES AT 6:00 PM
Fr. RHP Jack Degroat (1-0, 5.91 ERA) vs. Jr. LHP Taylor Stiles (1-2, 6.46 ERA)
Stiles didn’t make it out of the fifth inning in his second loss of the season at UC Irvine last week. Stiles allowed nine hits, six runs (just two earned), three walks, and struck out two in 96 pitches thrown. The southpaw has made six appearances out of the bullpen, and Tuesday will be his second start this season.
