Maryland was able to take two out of three on the road against the Penn State Nittany Lions to improve their record to 24-19 on the season and 9-6 in Big Ten play. Maryland also traveled to James Madison and avenged a loss from earlier in the season while battling through thunder and lightning that caused a two hour delay. The Terps beat the Dukes 19-12 in extra innings in a game that lasted 6 hours and 31 minutes.
This week, Maryland finishes off their five game road stretch in a midweek stint against Towson (17-28, 7-8 CAA) before coming home to play a three game series against Illinois (21-19, 7-8 Big Ten).
Winning the series against PSU, kept Maryland’s standing at 6th best in the conference. However, this series against Illinois is pivotal down the stretch because Illinois can leapfrog Maryland if the Fighting Illini sweep the Terrapins or they finish the weekend with a tied record in conference if Illinois takes two of three.
Maryland was able to improve their RPI rating 12 spots from last week. Neither of their upcoming opponents are ranked and have RPI ratings significantly lower than Maryland’s (Towson 223, Illinois 91) .
