Series Preview: Indiana Hoosiers

The Terps are coming back to College Park for a weekend set with Indiana.

Maryland will face off with the Hoosiers from “The Bob” on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

They enter the series coming off of a dramatic midweek comeback against UMBC. The Terps entered the bottom on the ninth trailing 12-10, but a clutch single from Chris Hacopian scored one run. His hit set up Sam Hojnar for the two-run walk-off single.

Despite their impressive 21-8 record for the season, Maryland is off to a pedestrian 3-3 start in Big Ten play.

Here’s what to expect from the visitors this weekend.

Indiana Hoosiers (16-14, 1-2 Big Ten)

Last Season

The Hoosiers came in second place in the Big Ten in 2023 despite having a better overall record than Maryland. The Terps were one game better in conference play, pushing Indiana down a slot. In the NCAA tournament, the Hoosiers were ousted in the regional after back-to-back losses against Kentucky.

This Season

The Hoosiers lost three huge producers from their 2023 squad. Shortstop Phillip Glasser, centerfielder Bobby Whalen and left-handed starter Ben Seiler all left the team. Those losses have proven heavy for Indiana.

The Hoosiers currently sit at 16-14 and lost their opening Big Ten series against Illinois. While some returning players like Devin Taylor and Brock Tibbitts have kept the offense afloat, the pitching has struggled mightily in 2024. The Hoosiers have a 7.05 team ERA and have switched up the rotation a few times throughout the season.

Hitters to Watch

Even though some stars carry the load, the Indiana offense has been very impressive in 2024. As a whole, the Hoosiers have batted .300 for the season entering this series.

Outfielder Devin Taylor is the star of the Hoosier offense. The sophomore has an incredible triple slash line of .377/.482./.588 to go along with his impressive 1.070 OPS. He’s tied for second on the team with six home runs and is tied for the team lead in walks with 24.

Fellow outfielder Carter Mathison has been the primary power bat for the Hoosiers in 2024. The Indiana-born junior leads the Hoosiers with seven home runs and has slugged .540 this season.

Pitchers to Watch

Indiana’s most productive starter this season has been sophomore Connor Foley. The righty has made seven starts for the Hoosiers so far and possesses a 3-1 record with a team-leading 3.75 ERA. He leads all Hoosier pitchers in innings with 36, and in strikeouts with 54.

Julian Tonghini is one of Indiana’s better bullpen arms. The junior Boston College transfer has made seven relief appearances for Indiana. He has a 1-0 record in 17 innings with two saves and 14 K’s.

Probable Starters

Friday, April 5: Kenny Lipmann vs. Ethan Phillips

Saturday, April 6: Logan Koester vs. Connor Foley

Sunday, April 7: Joey McMannis vs. Ryan Kraft (likely a bullpen game for Indiana)
