The Dirty Terps are riding high into their midweek versus Towson after picking up their first conference series victory of the season and winning four of their last five games.
After losing the series opener to Indiana 11-3 on Friday, the Terps bats flipped the script for the remaining two games. Devin Russell hit walkoff home runs in back-to-back games to close out the series, however, the two long balls came in very different fashion.
In game two Russell hit a solo shot over the scoreboard in left to walk off a 14-4 mercy rule victory in just seven innings. In the rubber match though, Russell came through when the Terps were trailing in the ninth. After entering the final frame, the Terps would load the bases before Russell came up to bat. In a 3-1 count, Russell would get the green light to launch a no-doubt home run over the centerfield wall, clinching the series win.
Maryland will look to keep this momentum going as long as they can as they fight for any chance of the postseason. Up next though, the Terps have their 83rd all-time meeting against the Towson Tigers. Maryland has often fared well against Towson going 50-30-2 against them while winning the last 12 of their matchups.
Towson Tigers (15-18, 4-14)
Last Season
In 2025 the Tigers went 21-35 overall with an 11-16 conference record. Their 11-16 CAA record placed them ninth out of 12 teams in the CAA, missing the six-team cutoff for the conference tournament.
Towson struggled on the road last year going 6-17 with one of those losses coming against Maryland. The Tigers fell to the Terps in a 11-1 mercy-rule defeat in just seven innings last April. In that game Brayden Ryan pitched all seven innings allowing the one run on five hits with six strikeouts. Both Chris and Eddie Hacopian both homered while Jacob Orr, Elijah Lambros, and Brayden Martin also recorded RBIs.
This Season
Towson opened its season going 5-4 before reaching conference play. Since then, the Tigers have won their last six midweek games yet have struggled mightily in conference play.
With a current 4-14 conference record, the Tigers sit dead last in the CAA North division and second to last in the conference only ahead of North Carolina A&T. The Tigers’ only conference wins have come against Stony Brook and Hofstra while they have been swept by Monmouth twice, Northeastern, and Campbell.
Hitters to Watch
Junior outfielder Brady Nathison is coming off a hot weekend where he went 6-for-11 with four RBIs, one home run, and three runs scored. Nathison has only started in 11 of the 23 games he has played in but over those games he is batting .365 with 19 hits, 16 RBIS, and seven stolen bases.
One of the most consistent parts of the Tigers’ lineup has been senior catcher Brian Heckelman. In 29 starts Heckelman is batting .330 with 21 RBIs and a .442 on-base percentage while leading the team with 35 hits and seven home runs.
Pitchers to Watch
Towson’s pitching has struggled for most of the season so far posting a team ERA of 6.15 and having only three pitchers on its roster with sub 4.00 ERAs.
One of those pitchers has been the Tigers’ go-to closer, senior right-hander Jacob Whiteman. Whiteman leads the team with four saves in his 11 relief appearances. Over his 22.2 innings pitched he has a 3.57 ERA and 20 strikeouts while limiting opponents to a .203 batting average.
Another one of the Tigers’ most efficient arms has been lefty Vincent Salvo who made his first start of the year in a midweek game against Coppin State last week. So far in 13.1 innings pitched, Salvo has a 2.03 ERA, seven strikeouts, and two wins while limiting batters to a .227 average. In his start last week, Salvo went five innings, giving up three runs on three hits while striking out two and walking two.
