Terps slug four homers in offensive showdown with Mount St. Mary’s

First pitch from Emmitsburg came in at 3:05 p.m. Jordan Crosland made sure that first ball wouldn’t stay in the yard.

He hammered the first pitch of the game over the wall to put the Terps on top early and his squad never looked back on offense.

Maryland (18-19) let its offense lead the way in a 19-8 slug-fest win over Mount St. Mary’s (17-20) on Tuesday at Straw Family Stadium.

Crosland’s long ball was only the beginning of the Terps’ first inning fireworks.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Bud Coombs stepped up to the plate. In the pivotal plate appearance, he was up to the challenge. Coombs doubled off the wall in left to clear the bases, putting Maryland on top by four.

Then, the offense kept trucking along to bring up Franklin Pichardo Jr with two on and two out. He joined the home run party, hitting his second long ball of 2026 to tack on three more runs for Maryland in the top of the first.

The Terps surrendered one run in the bottom half of the inning on an error, a concerning defensive trend for Maryland in the game.

Of the nine runs that the Mountaineers scored, only one was earned. Maryland’s defense committed five errors on the day to keep innings alive for the Mount St. Mary’s offense, ultimately costing the Terps a run-rule win.

On the other side of the ball, Maryland put up one of its best offensive performances of the year. Following the seven-run first inning that featured two home runs, the Terps switched to small ball in the third. Crosland and Brayden Martin both drove in runs, one on a single and the other on a fielder’s choice.

Then the Terps went back to the long ball in the fifth. Ryan Costello hit a grand slam for his team-leading 14th home run of the season. Maryland’s fourth and final home run of the offensive storm came in the ninth, a solo shot from Paul Jones II.

Maryland, which has now scored 16 or more runs in back-to-back games, looks to carry the offensive firepower into its weekend series at Michigan State. The Spartans are currently 12th in the Big Ten and hold the final spot in the conference tournament. If the Terps can pick up some wins in East Lansing, Maryland could gain some crucial ground in the chase for a Big Ten tournament berth.

First pitch in that first game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday. Ryan Martin is headed to East Lansing to cover all three games for MBN.
