Eight unanswered runs lead to Maryland’s Game 2 loss in East Lansing

Jordan Crosland, Brayden Martin and Ryan Costello all crossed home plate in the first inning, giving Maryland an early 3-0 lead. The Dirty Terps believed they would walk away with a victory for Game 2 against Michigan State, but disaster followed.

Four errors, eight unanswered runs, and nine players left on base caused Maryland (21-22, 6-14)  to lose Game 2 to Michigan State (15-25, 9-14) 12-4 in East Lansing.

The Spartans weren’t fazed after Maryland’s three-run first inning, as they fought back to keep themselves in the game.

Noah Bright scored first for Michigan State on a throwing error. CJ Deckinga then hit a two-run homer for the Spartans scoring himself and Khamaree Thomas to tie the game 3-3 by the end of the first.

Michigan State was able to get its first lead of the day in the second inning when Parker Picot scored on a fielding error.

Maryland tied the score in the third when David Mendez hit an RBI-single to score Costello, but that would be the last run the Dirty Terps would get. Michigan State was then able to score eight unanswered runs.

With two already on base for the Spartans in the bottom of the third, right-handed pitcher Brayden Ryan gave up a three-run homer to Picot, allowing Michigan State to retake the lead at 7-4.

Maryland stayed within three runs for the next couple of innings, until the sixth when Isaac Sturgess hit an-RBI single, scoring Dayton Murphy.

The Dirty Terps still couldn’t score in either the seventh or eighth inning despite leaving three runners on base in both.

Michigan State wasn’t satisfied with having a four-lead in the eighth and were determined to add as much distance in score as possible.

With two outs, Bright singled to center field, and Adam Broski crossed home plate. Sturgess then scored on a Thomas RBI-single. Thomas and Bright would both score later when Randy Seymour doubled, and by the end of the inning, Michigan State was up by eight.

Martin gave some life to Maryland’s batting in the ninth, when he hit a one out double. The Dirty Terps didn’t capitalize with him on second, as Costello and Bud Coombs struck out, and the Spartans won the game 12-4.
The rubber match starts at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday from East Lansing. Tune into first pitch where Ryan Martin will be on the call for MBN.
