Series Preview: Michigan Wolverines

After a disappointing weekend in East Lansing against Michigan State, Maryland baseball got back within one game of .500 with an 11-3 win over the Georgetown Hoyas.

Paul Jones II led the offense against Georgetown on Tuesday going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a home run, a walk and three runs scored. The Terps used six pitchers throughout the nine inning game, capped off by righty James Gladden striking out five over two innings pitched to finish the game.

Currently sitting 15th in the Big Ten standings with an overall record of 22-23 and conference record of 6-15, the Terps have minimal room for mistakes if they want any chance of making the Big Ten tournament going forward. The conference’s top 12 teams qualify for the postseason.

That won’t come easy this weekend though as they face a Michigan baseball team that has turned their conference season around as of late after starting off 1-6 through its first seven Big Ten games.

Michigan Wolverines (27-17, 12-9)

Last Season

While Michigan finished its 2025 regular season with winning records both overall and in-conference, its post season was short lived.

The Wolverines finished last season with a 33-23 overall record and a 16-14 conference record which included wins over two ranked teams. Michigan’s first ranked win came in its season opener as the Wolverines defeated No. 2 Virginia 5-4 in 11 innings during the Puerto Rico Challenge. Their second ranked win would come against Big Ten foe No. 15 Oregon with a narrow 12-11 victory in the series finale.

The Wolverines entered the Big Ten Tournament as the seven seed but were unable to make it out of pool play. In their first game of the tournament they fell in a disappointing 6-5 extra innings loss to Illinois. Michigan’s season came to an end after losing to No. 13 UCLA, 7-5.

This Season

Michigan currently sits sixth in the Big Ten standings after winning seven of its last nine conference games to get over .500 in Big Ten play. The Wolverines enter the weekend series with an overall record of 27-17 with a record of 12-9 against Big Ten opponents.

Just like it has been for the Terps, the Wolverines’ schedule has certainly not been easy this year. So far in 2026, Michigan has played 11 games against ranked opponents. Top 25 foes include Oregon State, Arizona, Florida State, Louisville, UCLA and Oregon. Through those 11 games though, Michigan has held its weight and won five. For the second straight year the Wolverines opened their season with a ranked win, this season against No. 12 Oregon State. They picked up a second win against Oregon State before picking up a win against No. 15 Louisville and two against No. 15 Oregon later in the year.

Not having played any midweek games this week, the Wolverines are most recently coming off a Big Ten series victory over Washington where they took the first two of three.

Hitters to Watch

The Wolverines’ main offensive threat proves to be junior infielder Colby Turner. Not only does Turner lead most offensive statistical categories for Michigan, but he also sits tied for first in the Big Ten with a .399 average and third with 69 hits. While leading the Wolverines in both categories, the junior also leads the team with 10 home runs, 40 RBIs, 15 doubles, 46 runs and 10 stolen bases. In his most recent game on Sunday, he reached base four times while scoring a run.

Michigan’s next best bat has been sophomore infielder Brayden Jefferis, who is second behind Turner with a .339 batting average, 47 hits and 31 RBIs. Jefferies also has eight doubles, one home run, 21 runs scored and six stolen bases on the year. The sophomore went 3-for-5 with an RBI in Michigan’s last game.

Pitchers to Watch

Michigan’s ace this year has been senior right-hander Kurt Barr, who has made 11 starts on the year. Through those 11 appearances he has a 5-2 record in 61 innings pitched, a 3.39 ERA, 73 strikeouts, 32 walks and .215 opponent batting average. In his last start against Washington, Barr pitched six innings while giving up three runs and striking out eight.

Michigan’s go-to arm out of the bullpen this year has been righty Gavin Devooght. He has 21 relief appearances on the season. In 41 innings pitched, Devooght has a 1-3 record, 4.55 ERA, 26 strikeouts, 20 walks and a .254 opponent batting average.
