Midweek Preview: Towson Tigers

The Dirty Terps are hitting the road for their final midweek away from College Park this season.

Maryland enters the game coming off a frustrating conference sweep at the hands of Michigan. The Terps dropped an extra-innings pitcher’s duel Friday, suffered a blowout, run-rule loss Saturday and closed out the weekend with a blown ninth-inning lead Sunday.

This, now Maryland’s penultimate midweek game after adding a third game against Georgetown to the schedule, is the Terps’ tune-up game heading into a crucial conference series at Rutgers this weekend. The Scarlet Knights are currently the “last team in” for the Big Ten tournament.

Maryland will complete the second half of its annual home-and-home with Towson, driving up the road to play at Brooks Robinson Field at John B. Schuerholz Park on Tuesday afternoon. Here’s what to know about the hosts:

Towson Tigers (18-27, 6-18 CAA)

Last Season

The Tigers went 21-35 overall with an 11-16 in the CAA. That 11-16 CAA record placed them ninth out of 12 teams, missing the six-team cutoff for the conference tournament.

Despite typically doing a home-and-home with the Terps, Towson only played Maryland once last season. The Tigers fell to the Terps in an 11-1, run-rule loss in just seven innings last April.

Brayden Ryan pitched all seven innings for the Terps that day, allowing one run on five hits with six strikeouts. Chris and Eddie Hacopian both homered while Jacob Orr, Elijah Lambros and Brayden Martin also recorded RBIs.

This Season

Even with their lackluster numbers in 2025, the Tigers have arguably been worse in 2026.

Towson has only won four weekend series all season, the last one coming almost exactly a month ago when the Tigers opened up April with two wins in three games against Hofstra.

Maryland hosted Towson back on April 14. The Tigers, who were 6-0 in midweek games entering that game, lost 15-7 in College Park. The Terps trailed 6-1 after the top of the third inning, but seized momentum on David Mendez’s three-run homer in the bottom half of the frame. Eight different Maryland hitters recorded at least one RBI in the contest, led by Mendez’s four.

On the pitching side, the Terps had a bullpen game. Andrew Koshy, Jake Yeager and Brayden Ryan all made relief appearances after Nic Morlang got the start. Maryland’s three relievers combined to throw seven innings without allowing an earned run.

Hitters to Watch

Junior outfielder Keldrin Rodriguez roughed up the Terps in that mid-April contest.

Hitting in the five-hole for the Tigers that day, Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk. He’s started in 42 of 45 games for Towson this season, hitting .301, good for second-best on the team. His 31 RBIs lead all Tiger hitters.

Brian Heckelman brings the main power in Towson’s lineup. Just under 40% of his hits this season are for extra bases, including a team-leading eight home runs. He went 2-for-5 in the first matchup, hitting two singles and striking out twice.

Pitchers to Watch

Morehead State transfer Nick Karls was the only Tiger pitcher to throw a clean inning in the first game. The junior right-hander only needed four pitches to retire his three Maryland hitters. His numbers for the season are much worse, though. Karls’ 14.73 ERA is the third-highest on the team and he’s allowed opposing hitters to average .368, the highest among Towson pitchers.

The Tigers’ top pitcher is probably Vincent Salvo. The sophomore lefty is 3-0 through 11 appearances in 2026 with a 3.13 ERA. He pitched two innings against the Terps on April 14, giving up two runs on three hits with a walk.
