Pitching Matchup:

R-Fr. RHP Ryan Selmer (3-0, 1.42) vs. R-So. LHP Hunter Virant (0-1, 3.28)

702981 Selmer vs. GHPQDIXVSJYNWVT.20150202212924

Selmer was a mainstay in the Terps bullpen for the entire season, leading the staff in appearances with 27, until he became a starter on the final day of the regular season against Northwestern. The redshirt-freshman threw six innings of one-run ball en route to a 4-3 win, and followed with a strong performance in his second start, holding the Indiana Hoosiers scoreless through 5.2 innings to help the Terps get to the Big Ten Tournament Final. Despite being the tallest member of the team at 6’8″, Selmer isn’t a strikeout pitcher—he’ll rely on pounding the strike zone and letting the defense behind him get outs.

Virant was injured during all of 2014 and was awarded a medical redshirt. This season, the southpaw, like Selmer, had made most of his appearances out of the bullpen. Virant has pitched just 24.2 innings this season in 22 appearances—three of them starts—striking out 12 and walking 11. Opposing batters are hitting .272 against him.
