Jose Cuas became the first Terp of the 2015 draft class to appear in the Minor Leagues this summer. He debuted with the Helena Brewers (MT) on Thursday, and started the first three games for Milwaukee’s rookie affiliate. Cuas is off to a nice start, going 4-for-12 with 2 walks, 2 doubles, 4 runs and 2 RBI already:
The Brooklyn native delivered a double against former VCU righty and now-Diamondbacks farmhand Matt Lees on Friday. Cuas is also playing with former Maryland commit Troy Stokes. Stokes signed with the Brewers in 2014 after being drafted in the fourth round out of Calvert Hall (MD).
Five other Maryland draftees have officially signed and should be beginning their pro careers within the next week. Two others remain unsigned:
Signed: LHP Alex Robinson (MIN), LHP Jake Drossner (MIL), INF Jose Cuas (MIL), RHP Kevin Mooney (WSH), C Kevin Martir (HOU), LHP Zach Morris (PHI)
Unsigned: 2B Brandon Lowe (TB), CF LaMonte Wade (MIN)
If Lowe and Wade don’t reach an agreement with their teams by July 17, they will return to college and play for Maryland in 2016.
Elsewhere in the Minor Leagues, LHP Jimmy Reed (2013, STL) continues to have a career year. The former All-ACC lefty was promoted to Double-A on June 2 and has only allowed four runs in his first four starts with Springfield (TX). Between both levels, Reed has worked to a 2.20 ERA over 12 starts. He has struck out 47 and walked only 13 in 77.2 innings of work.
