Andrew Bechtold came to Maryland as a shortstop, but after battling it out with Kevin Smith in the preseason, the majority of his action come at first base. However, just eight games into the season, Bechtold injured his thumb, requiring surgery, and ending his freshman campaign prematurely. In those eight games, Bechtold compiled six hits and four RBI. He received a medical redshirt, giving him an added year of eligibility.
Since Jose Cuas was drafted by the Brewers following the 2015 campaign, Bechtold figures to slide in nicely at third base this season. This should give the Terps plenty of range on the left side of the infield this season with, effectively, two shortstops playing side by side.
Players on the team were kind enough to fill out a questionnaire, so here’s what Andrew had to say about baseball and beyond…
Favorite baseball memory: Being drafted out of high school by the Texas Rangers. Getting drafted was a goal I set for myself after committing to Maryland during my junior year of high school and to achieve my goal and be taken in the 2014 draft was just a dream come true for me.
Why he chose Maryland: I liked the direction that the program was headed and I knew with the current coaching staff and players that Maryland was on the rise. Also it isn’t too far from home which allows my parents to come and see me play which was also a big factor for me.
Favorite Maryland Baseball Memory: Being in the Super Regionals last year against Virginia even though I was out with a hand injury it was still one of the best atmospheres that I have ever been in and it was a great experience to be there.
Goals for this season: I want to be a good team leader and mentor for some of the younger guys on the team. We have a lot of young guys that are going to have to play big roles for us to be successful and any way that I can help them out I know will benefit the team in the long run. So my goal would be to lead by example and be the guy that people look up to and aspire to be based on my work ethic and how I play the game.
Favorite teammate: Kevin Biondic. This guy would run through a wall to help us win a game and he always keeps things lose and light around the clubhouse. He works hard and really puts his body on the line for the team and he is also always willing to play wherever the team needs him to in order for us to win.
Hobbies: I enjoy watching Netfilx when we don’t have a game or practice, it relaxes me and it’s something I like to do in my free time.
Pregame playlist: I like listening to country music. Country and baseball to me have always gone well together and country music has been my favorite for as long as I can remember. Artists such as Luke Bryan, Sam Hunt, and Dustin Lynch are just a few that I enjoy listening too.
Favorite place to eat around campus: Chipotle
Guilty pleasure TV show: I really like watching Shark Tank to see what ideas people come up with.
Dream job (besides playing baseball): I would be a doctor for a professional sports team. I think it would be cool to work with professional athletes on a regular basis and to help them get healthy when they are injured. I think being around those types of people would be a fun and enjoyable experience.
