About Brian: After an up-and-down freshman year, Brian Shaffer emerged as a dominant starter in his sophomore campaign in 2016. He led the team in innings pitched (103.2), wins (8), WHIP (0.88), and shutouts (2), while ranking second in opponent’s average (.209) and ERA (2.60). As the Sunday starter for most of the season, Shaffer often got the ball in the rubber match and delivered, as the Terps were 10-5 in his starts. The right-hander was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week in March after a 99-pitch shutout at Cal State Fullerton, and followed that up with a 90-pitch one-run complete game against Iowa the following week. He delivered a gem in the Big Ten Tournament against Indiana, allowing just two hits and striking out eight in a complete-game shutout that kept Maryland’s season alive. With Mike Shawaryn’s departure to the Boston Red Sox system, Shaffer will take over as the Terps’ Friday night starter and ace this season, leading a staff that also includes Taylor Bloom, Hunter Parsons and Tyler Blohm.
