Maryland baseball hits four home runs in 11-7 comeback win vs. Rutgers

Mothers are known for their strength and resilience, and for not giving up no matter what may be going on inside or outside of the home.

And on this Mother’s Day, Maryland baseball showed a bit of resilience themselves, battling back multiple times in its series finale against Rutgers. After finding themselves down early, it looked like a familiar script where the Terps fell behind early and would have to claw back offensively.

After a leadoff single from David Mendez started the seventh inning, freshman Bud Coombs launched a two-run homer over the left-center field wall to give the Terps a late one-run lead.

The Terps (20-24, 8-20) defeated Rutgers (24-27, 11-16) 11-7 in the series finale and the Terps’ final road game of the season.

But the Terps had a complicated journey to get to that final score.

The Terps quickly loaded the bases in the first inning against Rutgers starter Dallin Harrison, thanks to a couple infield singles, including an RBI infield single from Paul Jones II. However, that would be the only run they would get.

Rutgers quickly responded in the bottom of the inning, thanks to a three-run homer from junior Ryan Jaros to put the Scarlet Knights up two.

The longball continued to work for Rutgers in the second as well, as junior Charlie Meglio added a solo shot to left to extend the lead.

That was enough to knock Terps’ righty starter Brayden Ryan out of the game after just three outs. He allowed five runs on six hits, including the two home runs.

Right-hander Andrew Koshy was first out of the bullpen, and he was able to stop the bleeding by pitching three scoreless innings.

The Terps once again were able to load the bases in the top of the third, and Jones II brought the Terps back even with a three-run home run to left. He would later add another homer in the fifth inning. Jones II hit two of the Terps’ four homers against on Sunday and had a game-high five RBIs.

But the Scarlet Knights wouldn’t go down quietly, as Trey Wells led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo homer, and Jaros later scored on a wild pitch.

But in the seventh inning, freshman Coombs stepped up in the biggest moment with a go-ahead two-run home run.

Jordan Crossland would add a solo shot in the eighth inning to give the Terps some insurance.

In the eighth inning, a little bit of history was made as well, as infielder Brayden Martin recorded his 138th career walk to tie Luke Shliger’s program record.

Sophomore righty Lance Williams pitched three scoreless innings to record his second save of the year and a Terps win.

Sophomore Michael Iannazzo, who has not seen much playing time this year, went 4-for-5 on Sunday after only coming in with five hits all year.

Maryland ends its seven-game conference losing streak and salvages one game in a disappointing weekend in Piscataway, NJ.

The Terps now return back to College Park for a midweek matchup against Georgetown on Tuesday before welcoming in Penn State to wrap up the season.

First pitch for Tuesday’s contest against the Hoyas is set for 6:00 PM, and you can listen to the game here on MBN, where Ryan Martin and Nick Polinsky will be on the call.
